The Crawfish Boxes

Matchup/Game Thread? vs. Pirates 7:05 CDT

Tom Gorzellany Woody Williams
0 - 0, 0.00 0 - 0, 0.0

The Astros have not opened the season by getting swept in a three game series at home since 1993, when Terry Mulholland, Curt Schilling, and Danny Jackson led the Phillies to back-to-back-to back road victories over an Astros team that would finish with 85 wins.

Hopefully we're saying the same thing next year this time, hopefully Woody comes up-with the goods, as he did in his last ST tuneup vs. the Royals.

Call me naive, but, excluding Lidge, whom I feel is a special case, I have no issues at all with the bullpen. I have confidence in Dan Wheeler and Chad Qualls and Rick White had a nice debut last night as well, don't you think?

To start freaking out about "THE BULLPEN!" as some are doing is not only a little premature, it confuses the 2006 track records of Qualls and Wheeler with that of Lidge.

We already saw that Dan Wheeler hadn't given up two runs in an inning before last night since the first part of June 2006, and focus this morning seemed to be on the fact that he nearly didn't last night either, since he may have been jobbed on that pitch to Paulino.

Wheeler is simply an elite set up man; I want him out there when it matters.

And Qualls gave up some shots in '06, sure, but he ended 2006 just fine, more than fine, actually.

I expect both Wheeler and Qualls to rebound from these bumps to start 2007.

Jason Lane will get the start again because of Luke's elbow, and it will mark the first time that Houston has gone with, rather than against, the platoon split in right field. Doing it wrong has worked out so well so far, I just hope the mojo we've got going in right isn't ruined.

A recurring computer problem has called into question my ability to post a game thread tonight. Time will tell, but if I'm not around tonight, it's not 'cause I don't think y'all aren't really swell people . . . .

Qualls/Wheeler
I'm not so sure about those two.

Springer meant an awful lot to the bullpen.

Springer
I disagree. I thought Springer was the worst in our pen last year. He always had trouble finishing guys and there was a reason why he usually came in the game when were down by a lot.

In terms of our big three in the pen I have the most confidence in Wheeler. He is the most consistent and gives up the least amount of homeruns. It was bad last night that Wheels gave up the go ahead runs but two of those hits were cheap. Nady's go ahead single  was a blooper and the hit that started the rally was a bunt (by Jack Wilson) for crying out loud. The only bad pitch that Wheeler made was to Paulino, which unfortunately occurred with a runner on second and two outs.

My whole issue with the pen is how Garner gave Lidge the job outright in Spring Training. Why? Lidge lost his job TWICE last year and at the end Wheeler was the closer. Lidge did nothing this spring to indicate that he was ready to close so in my opinion Garner erred in making lidge the closer off the back again. At the very least it shoulda been a closer by committee to start the year or Garner shoulda made it Wheeler's job to lose while having Lidge fix himself as a 7th inning guy.

I am also a little concerned with overworking the pen. We know this pen will be used a lot when Williams, Wandy, and Sampson pitch so it is important that Oswalt and Jennings to try and get 7 innings in every time. Of course, a lil offense will help take pressure off the pen too.

We will see. Lets just worry about not getting swept by the pirates.

While we're talking about the go ahead hit..
last night...I wondered if that bloop runs scoring single might have been caught if Willy T is in the game?  It would have been a tough catch...but he had a ton of "out of zone" catches (most in the ML's, according to HT stats).  I'm not bringing this up to complain about the trade; but, given the general view that the Astros' outfield defense will be worse this season, I think it is legitimate to keep some mental tabs on when our pitchers have been hurt by OF defense which is worse than last year.  Overall--and yes it is only 2 games--so far the outfield defense has looked pretty good.  I haven't seen any goofs by Lee or problems with Burke.  But that may be an example where Wheeler might have been saved by a running or diving Willy T last year.
And Willy T would fit in nicely
at the plate for these Astros, what with his .111 batting average so far, along with his .200 OBP.
Home Runs Allowed by Relievers in 2006
Just so it's handy.
Name IP HR HR/9
Dan Wheeler 71.3 5 .631
Dave Borkowski 71.0 8 1.014
Chad Qualls 88.7 10 1.015
Brad Lidge 75.0 10 1.200
Trever Miller 50.7 7 1.243
Russ Springer 59.7 10 1.508
Mike Gallo 16.3 3 1.653
Fernando Nieve 96.3 18 1.682
Let me go on record by saying...
White will have more saves than Lidge!  I know it's a stretch, but if for some odd reason it happens... I'll be sure to remind you of this moment =)
prediction
Astros 8 Pirates 4
Pitching has been outstanding
sure Lidge crapped the bed AGAIN and wheels struggled last night, but at the end of the day, the O scored a total of 4 runs against Snell and Duke....'nuff said.....
this game isn't gonna air
in college station is it?
heh
wouldn't surprise me.  I know last year they'd show games on channel 20 or 22 (forget which one) on regular cable, but I'm not sure if they're still doing that.
It's on Channel 2
In Houston.. KPRC I think
Top First
he writes gasping as he falls into his blogging chair just in time. . . .

Ack!  A Duffy double down the line to begin it for the Pirates.

Wilson
bunts, Berkman charges and throws, Biggio catches Berkman's throw, and Duffy takes third.
Bay
Lined sharply--on a bounce they tell us, though I couldn't see it--to Adam.

Duffy holds and Everett rifles to first.

THAT is a grade A defensive play on Adam's part.  That kind of shit eats up inferior shortstops.

That's why he's the best
Course he still can't hit a lick =)
How Many Doubles *You* Got This Year?
lol
point taken
LaRoche
A ball gets past Quintero, and Duffy dashes home.

But wait!  Woody and Humberto start barking, the umpires confer, and  . . .foul ball!  Hit the barrel of LaRoche's bat as it was pointed straight back at Q's mask.

Get back to third, Duffy!

Now LaRoche walks.

Paulino
who, Nady notwithstanding, had the AB of the game last night.

This time he flunks out, grounding to Bidge, who flips to AE for the force.

It's nice when
Umpires actually get together and make the correct call..doesn't seem like a lot to ask.. but not all umps would have done that..

Oh and let me just go on record by saying that I very much dislike Angel Hernandez... let this just be my first I dislike Angel Hernandez post of the year(there will be more.. I promise).

Bottom First
This early offensive futility has got me hungry for a big ass inning, a display of power, a flexing of the muscles, a slugging extravaganza.

Need it bad.

And here's hit 2932, a single to center.

Kickass Bidge.

68 to go
Berkman going deep would be cool.
Burke
broken bat roller to Castillo, who tosses to Wilson to retire Craig.

Wilson thinks about it but holds the ball, Burke safe at first on the FC.

Berkman
batting righty of course against the lefty Gorzellany.

Strikes out.

El Kabong
Gorzellany has Burke picked off, but Burke's too stupid--or too cussedly determined to care--so he keeps running towards second, and beats Laroche's throw into second.

How 'bout that?

Surprise!  A two-strike RBI hit up the middle.

I am gonna fucking LOVE this guy.

Burke comes around easily.

1 - 0 Astros.

Lee Can move
Would be hilarious if they played the Willy-T beep beep when Lee steals a base =)
Ensberg
Now Carlos steals, and truly, it is the beginning of a mancrush.  My gosh, just wait til he starts going to the Boxes:  Lee will need to slap a restraining order on my ass.

Ensberg is pitched inside and he hits the deck theatrically as a gasp of shock goes through the crowd.

Now a foul ball to third that Paulino cannot grab at the rail.

But dangit, a K from Morgan to end the inning.

That's a long drive
maybe he'll just have to have the retraining order when we play in FLA.
I'll Be Like That Crazy Lady Astronaut
but in reverse, driving from Florida to Houston.

And of course I'd stop if I needed to take a piss.

Top Second
Nady.

Liner over Biggo, and Lane runs and runs and runs and runs and finally, he catchs up to it a few steps before the wall.

An easy double.

Bautista
Liner to the right center gap.  Burke runs and runs and runs and runs, but doesn't catch up to it before it hits the wall.  Nady comes around to score and tie the game, Bautista into second.
Castillo
flies to left-center, semi deep.  Woody's scaring me.

Bautista bluffs, but that's why they call it bullshit.

Gorzellany
flies to Lee, alight at the end of the tunnel.
Duffy
pops to Everett.  Woody ended the inning as if the beginning of it never happened.  Admire the focus anyway.

Tie ballgame, though.

I know it's bad form to declare a race over
3 games into the season, but I'm betting Nady wins the inaugural version of my Ryan Freel award, given to the random player that comes out of nowhere to demolish the Astros. Man, I'd barely heard  of Nady before this year, and now I'm scared every time he comes up. :)
They Got A Name For That
Astrokillah.

I know the race ain't over, but if it helps, I hate the sonofabitch already. . . .

Astrokillah
I consider that a lifetime achievement thing. Though I actually just wanted to complain about Freel, who ruined one of the 3 games I got to see last season.
woody is getting destroyed
by a bunch of bums
I think destroyed
is jumping the gun a little.. let's give him a little more time =)
Bottom Two
Lane lines to center.  Brownie says hard-hit, but the Pirates hit 'em harder in the top of the frame.
AE
goes 3 - 1 then high and away a walk.
Ausmus
Berkman struck out so meekly against Gorzellany that I looked him up career against the guy and he's 4 for 10 with a double.

WAS 4 for 10 with a double, anyway.

Ausmus is quickly 0 - 2 then Gorzellany throws over to hold AE.  Gorzellany misses inside.

Now 2 - 2, maybe he'll walk, who knows?

Then two more throws to first.  I think he should focus on Ausmus.  Say Everett does steal.  Are you really that scared with a runner on second with Ausmus and the pitcher coming up.

On the other hand, if you're so distracted that you throw a cookie to Ausmus, he's like anyone else and can hit if for a double.

None of that happens though.  Ausmus pops to second.

Williams
flies to short center, real quick-like.
Top Three
Wilson singles to center, Bay grounds to Morgan, Wilson to second, LaRoche singles to right, making it runners on the corners, and I am caught up.
Paulino
goes to 3 - 2 in this prime RBI spot he';s wandered into.

Flies to shllow right, and all kinds of people are out there after it, but finally the man who needed to take it, does:  Jason Lane.

Afeared of the arm, Wilson holds.

Single X
The X Man.
X Marks the Spot.

Whatever, he looks at a good curve then is HBP.

Bases juiced.

Bautista
flies to Lane, and Woody slithers away out of the jam, like the crusty old Texas rattlesnake he is.

Or some shit like that.  Could have gone the other way I guess, but unlike, let's say, Wandy, he can keep his composure when he gets into trouble, even if his stuff ain't much anymore.

the game is on KNWS-TV which is a houston station
that doesn't reach College Station, so i signed up for MLB.Tv so i can watch the game, and it's blacked out here-this blows
I feel for you...
they really should not black out any games.. I mean you're paying for it..
Bottom Three
Biggio slaps it hard to third, Bautista gets all defensive and the ball doesn't just eat him up, it DEVOURS him.  He gets up and heaves.

Biggio hauling ass, how does he do that?  I'm 41 as well, and I can't run to the freaking kitchen.

Safe!

2933, alright!

Burke
singles the other way, pretty pretty pretty, Biggio takes third.

More of that hustle stuff.

Berkman
flies to right, Nady catches and throws as Bidge tages, but it's off line, Biggio easily gets us the 2 - 1 lead.

Burke decides to take second as he watches this, and Paulino throws, also poorly, and Burke is in.

Looks like an error on Paulino there.

Lee
I dig the "Los Caballitos" sign, but the strikeout on the chest-high fastball, not so much.
Ensberg
.111?  Yikes!

Can't catch up to a fastball, strikes out.

Double yikes.

What if we're all wrong and Morgan DOESN'T rebound this year?

It's too awful to think about.

Top Four
Castillo grounds to Everett, gobbled and thrown on.

Next, please.

Gorzelanny
is hit by pitch, that sucks.
Duffy
flies to Jason
Wilson
flies to right, also.
Bottom Four
Lane a shallow pop to right.  Nady comes in Castillo goes out, LaRoche goes out

Castillo has the best shot, but it drops, you kind of knew it would.

Lane never stopped running, beautiful, and he slides head first into second.

AE
bouncer to Wilson that he fields at ground-level, Adam flying down the lane beats the throw, nice.

Hustle quotient high this eve.

Lane had to hold.

Quintero
singles through the left side hole, pretty well hit, but not well enough to get Lane home.

Bases juiced with no outs.

Williams
hit a fly to center last time, that would work here.

He looks at a first pitch something that comes high and inside, then a fastball high and away.

Excellent 2 - 0 with the bases loaded.

Williams was swinging 2 - 0 and I love the concept, but it was ball three.  Fouled away.

Dribbler up the third base line goes foul and now it's 2 - 2.

Fly ball, really short center, Castillo goes out, and makes an over the shoulder catch, Lane no shot to tag and go.

Still only one out, so it's all good, nice AB, sorta.

BGO
Laid off a couple good fastballs on the corner, 2 - 1.  Fouled off to the right side, 2 - 2.

Stays alive, but ends up fouling out to LaRoche.

That hurts a little more.

Burke
Just like the Baby Biggio he is, Burke is HBP to drive in the run.

3 - 1 'Stros.

Berkman
grunded to Wilson deep in the hole, but the second best defensive shortstop in the NL has the force at second, so the inning ends with Burke out there.
WWWD
What would Willy do???

(on that ball to Tal's hill that just drove in Jason Bay)

Who knows. I'm over it, Burke is better in the batter's box.

Dammit!
I just jinxed him. My bad everyone.
Top Five
Jason Bay swinging bunt into no man's land, Woody jumps off the mound to retrieve nice play, but Bay is safe.
LaRoche
flies out to Burke
Paulino
hits it hard--as many Pirates tonight have done.  Bay keeps running and running and running until he's sitting on the bench having scored.

Paulino--a catcher, mind you, has an easy double.

Nady
WTF, I step away 'cause Melanie's home (yay!) and we're trailing.

Looks like Nady flied to center and Burke screwed it up somehow, Nady ending up on second, and Paulino taking third.

Maybe something rolled to the wall?

Then it says Bautista singled to center, Paulino and Nady scoring.

Anyway, 4 - 3 Pirates, however it happened.

Castillo
grounds to Morgan who comes in, and throws hard to get the out, and Baustista takes second.
Gorzelanny
walks and Adios Woody.
Duffy
soft little grounder to Adam that he'll handle no prob--whoops!  it goes through his fucking legs.

He scrambles after it, and it's like a watermelon seed, or something, it escapes him again into short right center.

Butista scores, Gorzellany to second, a nightmare, Adam charged with not one but two errors on the play.

Brutal three-error inning, and it ain't over yet.

5 - 3 Bucs.

Wilson
So discombobulated by AE's screwup, that I forgot to tell you it was Borkowski pitching to Duffy.

he faces Wilson and strikes him out to end the inning.

Woody was on the endge the whole game
You can only get out of it so many times.. he was due to get scored on...
it must be said
that none of those runs score if Willy is playing CF.
beltran just hit his 2nd hr of the night
against the cardinals
Bottom Five
Lee hits it sharply to third, and Bautista robs Lee of double.

Vibes are poor right now.

Wow, the bloody Pirates are gonna sweep us at home to start the year, holy cow.

Ensberg
singles to left-center, that's something, anyway.
Lane
fouls out to LaRoche, and Everett lines somewhat sharply to Nady.
Top Six
Bay k's and wow, LaRoche K's, three straight for Borks.
Paulino
grounds to Ensberg who makes a nice grab inches off the floor and throws over to end the inning.

Nice work, Dave.  Keep it up, and ell start calling you Super Dave again.

Is there such thing as a pitcher platoon?
Methinks we should have Woody and Borks split 8 innings of work every fifth day, that way Woody wouldn't tire out and Borks could do what he does best, long relief.
Bottom Six - Top Eight
as I was once again called away. . . .

Shawn Chacon, who we always rock, comes in to face Q, and Q immediately grounds out to short.

Then OP grounds out to short.  C'mon people, you OPS .873 against the guy

Biggio shakes it up by grounding to third.

Top 7th
Sampson in to pitch, way to think outside the box, Gar.

Nady lines to Bidge, and shouldn't Loretta be in about now?

Bautista singles in front of Burke.

Castillo flies to center, looking for some ground balls, Chris.

Chacon--the pitcher--flies to right.

I don't know if I like SDampson as much without the grounders.

Bottom Seven, Chacon still pitching.

Burke flies to center.
Berkman flies to right.
Lee grounds to second.

Sampson still pitching,, and he gets Duffy swinging.
Wilson singles up the middle.

Bay grounds to Morgan , who elects to go for the force at second on Wilson, and it's a good choice.

LaRoche k's looking, a better inning for Chris.

Still 5 - 3, though.

Bottom Eight
Matt Capps in for the Bucs

Ensberg flies out to center.

Lane flies out to right, and Everett  grounds out to third.

Pretty meek here.

Top Nine
Sampson out for his third inning.

Chris Sampson pitching:
Paulino: grounds out to Morgan
Nady grounds to Adam
Bautista lines to Lee.

Bottom Nine
Loretta hits for Quintero:  whiff
Lamb hits for Sampson: popped to second.

Nothing doing for the Astros after the seventh all series.

Ah, here's something:  Biggio homers to the boxes.  Third hit of the game, how about that you Biggio naysayers you?

Renewd hopes are dashed however as Burke strikes out to end it.

Pirates    5  10   2
Astros     4   8   2

Box

Well, all we gotta do is play 31 over the rest of the way to win 90.

No problem, right?
