The Crawfish Boxes

Game Hero, 22 - 31

Carlos Lee
  • 2 for 4, 2 RBI, 3 Runs Scored
  • Equals team-high 5 runs produced
  • 4 for 8, 2 doubles since GIDPing to end the game Tuesday
  • Team-high .147 WPA per Fangraphs
  • Full vote from Stros Bro
  • Conditional support of varying strength from MG, saylinara, and Joe in B'ham
  • Leads the NL in RBI, what else is new

Looks like it was a great game, I may have to watch it someday. In the interim, I'll have to make do with the sense of inner peace I get from being able to say that the Astros won last night.

Make do with that, and the still-lingering bewilderment from the Reds guys who took over our Game Thread for a while there. Give them this: they never let the fact that only half of what they posted was funny stop them from posting still more.

In dealing with the somewhat strange but in the end harmless invasion, I hope I came off merely grumpy and not rude.

Anybody hear any rationale as to why Quintero didn't catch Woody for the first time all year?

And lastly, realize that the Astros are now reserving a roster spot for a guy whom they trust less to pinch-hit than a pitcher who was on the DL three days ago.

Lane is so obviously history, they're writing him into textbooks as I speak, yet somehow he's still on the 25-man.

It can't possibly be for long, although I have to say I don't see how bringing Burke back clarifies anything.

You still won't want Chris in center, and you still can't play him at second. And never mind the fact that we're all looking for the graceful death of The Platoon, he, um, has a history of injury in right.

It's actually not the first time
Quintero hasn't caught for Woody.  They switched this in Woody's last start.
and Honorable Mention
Goes to the ASTROS TEAM.  That's right. A team victory.  Sixteen K's, sixteen hits.
You weren't rude
at all.  Nobody should mess with our J. D., and I for one appreciated that defense.

Do I remember correctly, didn't the Reds guys do this same crazy invasion thing last year?  Somebody did, and the Dread Pirate nickname seemed familiar (outside of that great movie).

Woody Williams....
I recall reading something a week or so ago (after Williams' really bad game in SF, I think)which indicated that Woody had asked for Ausmus to catch him.  Woody had trouble getting on the same page as Quintero for pitch selection...constantly shaking off his signs, etc.

Hey, and how about all the strike outs by Williams?  That was a blast from the past. Unfortunately, it caused him to pile up a terrible pitch count, and brought White out of the pen early.

Amend this statement....
I just noticed in this morning's Houston Chronicle that Garner said the change in catcher was his decision, rather than Woody's.  Garner said:

"Manager Phil Garner said he believed a change in catchers might help Williams get back on track.
'I think that on balance Woody has pitched a little bit too high in the zone, more than he would probably like to,' Garner said. 'He does pitch at the top of the zone a few times, but then I think a lot of times he needs to be down in the zone.'
Garner said Williams had no issues with Quintero."

Loved the game thread
that skit they put on in the beginning with Joe Morgan was hilarious. That takes some serious knowledge and dedication.

I am in awe of the commitment of the Red Reporter posters. Great job.

Shamus
Thaenk you very much. I always enjoyreed my time in Houston very much. There was a Dairy Queen I used to go to with my wife and daughters when they were young near the Astrodome. I have to say that I was proud to be the first and last African-American player to play for the Astros. It was a great honor. I also think that Andy Petit will have a great year this year. He brings veteran leadership to this team, which can only help when younger players want tot know how to win. As a former second baseman, I'm also excited for Bagwell's 4,000th hit.
Umm Yea
And Joe Morgan is one of the worse announcers in the history of baseball(IMO).
"I Was Proud . . .
to be the first and last African-American player to play for the Astros"

What're you trying to say there, Joe?

And how come you lost your ability to spell?

Having been a smart enough player to hang around into your 40's, long after your skills had declined, I always figured you were smart enough to spell "thank."

I always thought a lifetime .392 OBP spoke pretty well for your baseball intelligence, but maybe that's just me.

I was also wondering why it's OK for everyone to have some half-assed opinion except you.

Anyway, just an admirer saying keep doing what you're doing.

Don't go a-changing, it'd put a lot of people out of business.
