| When Munson batted in the 12th, I was thinking Gar should have pinch-hit with Ausmus. It ain't easy catching 12 innings. I knew Garner wouldn't do this, because he's deathly afraid of injury to the catcher with one out of the game, but events in the bottom half proved that a fresh Ausmus in the 12th would have been a good idea |
|
Garner tempted fate by pitching McLemore two innings, but Mark rewarded Garner's faith with his best major league appearance. |
Quotes from the game:
"Just kind of a weird play," Munson said. "To tell you the truth, I don't know what the ruling is. I guess if it goes into the dugout or out of play it's two bases, but I think you have to touch it again."That's what I think the rule is. I tried to block the ball and it kicked off and went over by their dugout, and I went chasing after it. It rattled around in between their on-deck stuff, and I went down on a knee to reach for it and it was gone. I didn't see it."
Garner sought the umpiring crew for clarification after the game and was told Munson had touched the ball before it went into the dugout, giving Cabrera home plate. Garner said Cabrera would have had to stay at third base had the umpires not ruled Munson had touched the ball again.
Um, hello you jerkoff, your catcher just said he did not touch the ball. You never, EVER believe the umpiring crew over your own catcher. As a player, I thought you would have known that it is bull when your manager second-guesses you. As a scrap-iron manager, you should have never let that happen. I've been a fan of you up until this point. Now, hell if I'm not the one leading the "Fire Garner" brigade.
Lastly, Munson should know the rules better then that. Looks like Ausmus and Munson will be sitting down for some hardcore Catching 101.

Garner
If Garner protests the call and wins he will get back all of the respect I lost for him this year.entropic soul - August 5, 2007
I've been looking at the rules
and found this:3.14
Members of the offensive team shall carry all gloves and other equipment off the field and to the dugout while their team is at bat. No equipment shall be left lying on the field, either in fair or foul territory.
I haven't looked at the replay of that wild pitch yet, but I'm reading that the ball clearly hit a weight left in the Marlins' on-deck circle, then bounced where Munson couldn't grab it. Munson said he didn't touch the ball before it went crazy.
If Gar's gonna protest, he's got, what, 58 minutes left?
94CougarGrad - August 5, 2007
I'd be amazed if he did protest
Stros Bro - August 5, 2007
Oh...
that probably would be too much trouble. After all, it's only a loss.Pupura and Garner can't seriously keep up this charade that the Astros are playing to get back in the race this season if they don't file a protest.
clack - August 5, 2007
my understanding is...
That they didn't protest because it was a judgement call. The umpire thought that Munson knocked the ball into the dugout after it was already a wild pitch which would give him 2 bases. The umpire obviously missed the call but I don't think you can protest missed calls because if you could you would protest balls and strikes and close plays etc.TimStros - August 5, 2007
I Had Always Thought
that balls and strikes were one thing, and then there was everything else.Though I never knew about this one base/two base thing, so my knowledge is a bit limited. . . .
rastronomicals - August 5, 2007
i'm not sure either
My guess is that if the game mattered then Garner would have protested but he has probly given up just as most everyone else has. But it's nice to know that so many of here still care.TimStros - August 5, 2007
Discouraging
This episode is rather discouraging. While I entertained no illusions that the Astros could make any kind of run at the playoffs this year, I at least was willing to play along with the charade after the Astros refused to make any big moves to rebuild.Well, so much for the charade.
