Matchup/Game Thread Houston Astros at New York Mets, 12:10 CDT

Woody Williams Tom Glavine
8- 13, 4.95 12 - 6, 4.06

To those of you dismayed by the fact that the Astros have allowed 10+ runs in two straight games, do not fret. It's not even a season worst!

Those of you not repressing the memory may recall that, spurred by the Padres' infamous Sunday massacre of Jason Jennings, the club gave up 10+ runs in each of the four games played between July 29 and August 2.

So no sweat here, folks. Even if season-long home-run king Woody Williams has one of those games we don't like to talk about, the Astros STILL wouldn't have set the season- and franchise-worst mark in that regard.

It's information like this that should make your Saturday-matinee viewing experience more restful and calm.

That's if you can, in fact, watch the game, which I can't, all praise be to Fox.

Have to check MLB channel...
sometimes they show it anyway...
p2p
Sorry if this is a double post. I seem to have problems posting here.

If any of you have a fast computer and connection, you can view this game via p2p. They typically carry games from big-market teams like the Mets. link

I've never watched games this way but Rockets fans on the CF board seem to have success with this. The Beginners Guide explains what you need to know (I think you need to download and install Sopcast).
Thanks for the info
Right now the radio give me time to catch up on paying bills and eating lunch. If I get things under control and can settle down, I'll check the site out.

Another Saturday stuck with gameday
I really hate that.

Pence, Burke and Berkman all go down in order like good little boys for the Mets.

As for the Mets
Reyes flies out.
Castillo reaches on a missed catch error by Berkman.
Wright walks on a bunch of pitches.
Beltra$h flies out. (Castillo advances to third)
Alou... grounds into a force out and Woody escapes unscathed.. at least for now.
Carlos Lee
Flies out to start the 2nd.

Just going through the motions?

I wonder if Carlos Lee had similar fan clubs to Los Caballitos in other cities.

Mark Loretta (2nd)
He strikes out.
Did you know that Mark Loretta once pitched a major league game? Well, I don't know if that's true, but mlb.com has him on record as doing so in 2001 for the Brewers. He has 1 walk, 1 hit and 2 strike outs in 1 inning pitched.
Ty Wigginton
does something to get an out.
Mets 2nd
Green grounds out, Ransom to Berkman.
Lo Duca copies him.
Milledge hits a single to Carlos Lee.
Then Glavine ground out too.

Another inning unharmed for Master Woody

Astros 3rd
The march continues as Cody Ransom grounds out...
Eric Munson strikes out...
And Master Woody grounds out.
Mets 3rd
Bunch of ground outs, but David Wright throws a solo shot in there and Mets lead 1-0.
Curious Cecil Cooper statements
I could not decide yesterday if the Astros have given up and are mailing in the season; or if Cooper and Astros management have decided to  evaluate players and not worry about final scores (a fall training or even a minor league approach).

Since Astros through their history have pushed to the final game of the season even if the only goal was to climb the ladder a little, I concluded Cooper & Friends had decided to deconstruct the team and rebuild it (Blow this thing up and see what we got).

Then the radio guys say Cooper is mad with the blowouts and how the team is playing, and Cooper says the guys are not trying to win, followed by the threat, "Things will turn around I guarantee it"  or something akin to that.

What's the deal? Have the players given up? They certainly look confused - is that from beaten players? or from players not on the same page as the manager? Is the team worse now than it was when the Big Ax fell? What's the deal?

cooper
was embarrassed that the entire fielding team in thee 6th yesterday didn't realize the inning was over until  the mets players came onto the field  with their gloves.  That isn't exactly  having your head in the game.
I mentioned yesterday
Here's the entry: "The Astros defense was seven guys wandering around enjoying the night air with a pitcher with a deer in headlights look. Not sure what's happening behind the plate."

I recall thinking,"reminds me of kids in a peewee league game."

Ty Wigginton
Grounds out to end the 5th inning.

Glavine pitching a PERFECT GAME through five.

Craig Biggio's dad
I wondered on TCB why Craig Biggio flew back to Houston the other day. Turns out his father is  "in a bad way" adn "things not looking good" according the radio guys. Sounded like he is on his death bed. Prayers out to the Biggio family.
Which is worse?
  1.  Having a team score 10+ runs against you?
  2.  Having a perfect game thrown against you?
Perfect game for sure
Someone better do something.
Score update
A walk, steal, advance on ground out and home on a wild pitch by Castillo plates the Mets' third run. 3-0 Mets.

Each base one by one and all different ways. Neat.

Ransom, Munson and Williams
Lookinng to break up the prefect game in the 6th. If anyone should do it, I think it should be Woody.
Whew
Ransom breaks up the prefect game with a single.

Surely, we would have been the laughing stock of millions who are not already laughing at us.. :p

Of course, as soon as we get our first baserunner, we get our first double play.

First Hit: Cody Ransom singled
Followed almost immediately by GIDP Munson
Woody Williams
With Glavine threatening to pitch a perfect game until the sixth inning, and we mopped about the Astros non-offense, Woody Willimas has labored in obscurity.

Through six, he's done pretty well against the Mets powerhouse offense, holding them to 3 runs on five hits.

The Sixth was Woody's last inning
Chad Qualls pitched an uneventful seventh
Yes
He's done a good job today. Another quality start.
OK for Woody
though Mets not "powerhouse," sixth in the league in homers, 10th in homers at home, 7th in home OPS, 8th in the league in BA vs. righthanders, though they ARE 3rd in runs since the break, anyway, you get the idea.
The Importance of Cody Ransom's Single
No Met pitcher in the history of the Mets has pitched a no-hitter  much less a perfect game.
Astros don't want to the the first victim.
Carlos Lee
singles! We have ourselves a two hitter!
A THREE Hitter
Loretta singled.

and Tom Glavine leaves the game, having thrown only 86 pitches.

That's lame
We need some more hits.
Loretta Singles!
Glavine getting absolutely hammered...
uh..
relatively speaking. :p
Astros started FOUR second basemen
Wigginton at third
Ransom at short
Loretta at second
Burke in right

No wonder Astros have no offense.

That must be...
a characteristic of losing teams.  I recall last year, during the Cubs' death march season, that the cubbies frequently started 4 middle infielders.  That seemed to be a flaw in Dusty Baker's team building; he loved utility infielders.
3-1 as Wigginton singled.
Three straight singles for the Astros
Ty Wigginton
Singles! Carlos Lee scores! Loretta to 2nd. Shut out gone!
Luke Scott struck out
Luke Scott pinch hit for Cody Ransom. But he struck out on a 3-2 count. So one of the Astros second basemen leaves the game.
Eric Munson Struck out
Air going out of the Astros balloon. But Mike Lamb to pinch hit peps me up.
Mike Lamb Struck Out
Two Men stranded.

Bummer.

Three singles
three strike outs.
I guess.
From Astros.com
Coops says he didn't know about Wandy's thumb:

"You should be secure enough to tell someone," Cooper said, shuffling through an injury report that didn't include Rodriguez. "His name wasn't on there, so I have to assume he's fine."

(Article goes on to talk about how many walks he has in his wins and loses)

"Those are things that can't happen," Cooper said. "He's a veteran pitcher; he's been around a while. He's not 21."

Doesn't anyone talk to the pitchers?
I'd think a manager would talk to his starting pitcher, ask how he's feeling, is there anything the manager should know, etc.  I'd think the pitching coach would do the same.

How did Wandy get to the mound without someone asking him  a question that would have elicited an answer that "My thumb hurts and I cannot control my pitches because of my thumb!"?

Well, I would assume
that did happen and Wandy just said he was fine. Most people do. I think he was using the injury report to illustrate the point of how is he supposed to know if Wandy doesn't tell him.
Yeah
I've always been a fan of Wandy's, but this sounds pretty chumley on his part. . . . .

las excusas están para los pescados, Sr. Wandy

Three up, three down
For Lidge and Qualls
Hunter Pence grounds out
He's 0-4 today.

Did he make any good defensive plays?

Oh yeah, Billy Wagner is in
with his shiny 2.56 ERA
Burke strikes out
Berkman is the last hope!!!
Berkman grounds out
0-12 top of the order today with 3 strike outs and nothing else.
Short game
Barely two hours 15 minutes (and even shorter for me since I missed the first hour)
I was hoping
Wiggy would bat again...
why?
So I could use this pic again
I think he looks like patrick star from the spongebob squarepants cartoon.
Cool!
Last year saylinara and I determined that catcher/utility man JR House looked like one of those flying turtles from the Super Mario games.

Oh, the fun we had.

You're right!
I love Patrick and all, but I wasn't getting it until you said that.
Astros Tie
a season-low in men left on with 2, originally set April 24 at Pittsburgh
Remember your exercise
earlier in the season to determine if the Astros were leaving too many runners on base.  It seems like they have cured that problem.  Of course, the cure is worse than the problem.
