Astros Hot Stove Noise 11/25/08: Astros one of seven teams interested in David Ross

I missed this one this morning, but Astros.com is reporting that the Astros have had talks with David Ross' agent, and are one of seven teams to inquire on Ross.

His agent, Ryan Gleichowski, is also the agent of Paul Bako and had this to say about Bako's fit with the Astros:

No question, Paul would have interest in Houston. He's from Louisiana, so he's not far away. He would definitely have interest.

Ross, 31, is a career .222/.309/.435 hitter and posted a .225/.369/.352 last year between the Reds and a brief stint with the Red Sox.  If Ross can put up that kind of OBP, I'd be very pleased (his NL split was .389).

I think that quote is referring to Paul Bako and his interest in Houston, not so much David Ross.

Anyhow, I have no problem with an active interest in a low salary kinda decent veteran backstop while we evaluate Towles and wait for Castro. My only complaint would be if Ross or whoever gets a vast majority of playing time and Towles has to sit. I really think Towles should get another full time starting opportunity to prove himself. Oh, and Sean Berry shouldn’t be allowed within 25 ft of him.

Essssh

So it was.

Let this be a testament to the fact that cramming and blogging don't go together
Recall that I suggested David Ross in our catcher free agent thread....

a few weeks ago. So, I like the idea that the Astros are interested in him. He has shown HR power in the past, but lost it last year. He has a good OBP, which is an improvement for the Astros, but it’s also possible that he might regain his HR power.

I’m not so excited about Bako. Bako is an acceptable defensive catcher, but his offense is bad.

I do recall your nod for Ross

I hope he comes on board, that would be a very positive uptick in OBP.

I'm pretty sure

that Ross raked a little in ‘06. He won’t get much of an average, but hopefully he can manage a decent OBP if we sign him.

David Ross?

This is depressing. I wish Drayton and Wade would just commit to re-building rather than spending money on vets to be a mediocre team.

Could Ross have been on the Juice in 06?

2006 is definitely the post juiced Era

Maybe the HGH, but that really doesn’t do anything for you.

My positive reaction to Ross is biased because it seemed...

like he was always doing damage to the Astros in a clutch way. So, I checked his career numbers. He is a .905 OPS hitter against the Astros with 4 HRs. He also raked in 13 games at Minute Maid: .270, .364, .595, .959. Yeah, small sample size, but it leaves an impression on you as a fan.
