The Crawfish Boxes

Houston Astros VS Detroit Tigers : Spring Training Game 32

Your Houston Astros send Shawn Chacon to the hill against Nate Robertson of the Tigers.  Chacon is more than likely going to be the Astros 4th starter, so hopefully he doesn't get shelled like Wandy/Woody did yesterday...  we're going to need some decent pitching this season.

Yesterday the Astros got destroyed by the Tigers 10-0 with Bonderman on the mound.  The Tigers are a really good team with good pitching and an offense 2nd to none.  The Astros have a really good offense, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Tigers offense.  The Tigers were 15-3-3 this spring season... with their lineup and pitching, that doesn't surprise me.

Game time is 1:05PM CST.  This is the last game before the Astros head to San Diego to start playing some real, meaningful baseball.

When are the FSN telecasts...

going to be shown in Austin?

tomorrow

supposedly. are you in austin too, clack?

yes, I'm in Austin

but the Astros don't play tomorrow

duh

i meant monday. however, i just saw that espn2 has the astros game monday as part of a triple-header. i know i saw astros listed monday or tuesday for fsn.

Cruz

Made the team. Is he a logical backup for Bourn when Bourn scuffles? (Such as now?) I don't know much about him. How is his CF defense?

I would be wary...

of Cruz in CF at MMP. He is more of a corner outfielder nowadays. Cruz could play it if he had to, but I suspect that Erstad will be primary replacement for Bourn in CF. Alternative might be to move Pence back to CF, if you had to, and then play Cruz in RF.

Wiggy gets the teams first RBI

in Minute Maid park this year. Tejada is the first run scored. Too bad Wiggy bounced into a force out to get it.

Wiggy just got

picked off/caught stealing.

Can't hit, can't catch the ball and now he can't even avoid getting picked off. Good work.

Chacon

gives up a solo shot in the top of the third.

I noticed something about gameday. It not longer says "In play, runs scored" on a solo homerun. It says "In play, no outs" like the batter just hit a single or something. Or maybe that was a fluke. :p

Pence

Homers in the bottom of the third to tie it up again. And it did do the "In play, no out" again.

Bot 4, 0 Outs

Berkman doubles. Then Lee follows. Berkman scores.
Tejada grounds out and Lee stays put at second.
Cruz up again. He follows his first RBI with another RBI. Double. Astros playing switch places with the guy on second this inning. That's 3 doubles.

Wiggy

Not only doing poorly, but he's having bad luck too. He just FLEW into a double play.

Good 6th inning for us.

6th inning Recap.
New pitcher for the Detriot Tigers, the team who is a favorite to win the World Series this year: Yorman Bazardo.
Loretta singles.
Berkman walks. Loretta to 2nd.
Perez in to run for Berkman.
Lee doubles. Loretta scores. Perez to third.
5-3 Astros.
Bourn in to run for Lee.
Tejada singles. Perez scores. Bourn to third.
6-3 Astros.
Cruz with another RBI opportunity comes up short. He pops out. 1 Out.
Wiggy up. He wants to prove he's not the disaster he's been looking like all Spring Training. So he sends one into the Crawford Boxes.
Bourn scores. Tejeda scores. Wigginton scores.
9-3 Astros.
Towles pops out. 2 outs. Finally.
Abercrombie pops out as well. 3outs.
9-3 Astros after 6.

Pence's HR

What a blast - a line drive homer straight into the Crawford Boxes! It wasn't coming down when it cleared the fence - it was absolutely a bullet!

And Wiggy's was a no-doubter in the 6th. Reminded me of some of Bagwell's HRs off the facade in left.

Lance, Carlos and Miggy all had nice hits as well. The only worrisome plays were two line drives to right field - one to Pence and one to Abercrombie. Both guys charged the ball and tried to make the catch, but didn't block the ball, so it rolled past them and almost to the fence before the center fielder backed them up. Pence's misqueue led to their first run.

All in all - great game! Glad to be back in MMP seeing the boys in person!

Astros win 9-4

Pence took the team lead for homeruns today with 5.

Very nice to see the Astros come back after being strummed yesterday and get a little payback... for just the Tigers 4th loss this spring.

what??

this is the 2nd time i've read it's the Tigers' 4th loss on crawfish boxes - it's their 14TH loss... they are 15-14 on the spring (don't know about ties).

15-14-3

15 wins, 14 losses, 3 ties this spring for the Tigers.

Bah

I got wrong information from Astros.com and have been too tired lately to catch it... here's the proof that it wasn't my fault! :)

Hey, I have a question. . .

How is it that Abercrombie played today when he was outrighted yesterday? And he currently (as of 9 p.m. Saturday night) appears no where on the website roster list--not as a non-roster invitee, even. (But at this moment, Cruz, Jr. doesn't appear on even the 40-man roster, either. Weird.)

I assume...

they are allowed to use minor league players in the game, because it is still a spring exhibition game. So Abercrombie and other players from the minor league camp (Gorneault, for instance, also played Saturday) accompanied the big league team as "extras." During regular spring training games, they often use players from the minor league camp who aren't on the roster even as NRIs. They don't have to formalize the big league roster until Sunday. And they probably don't adjust the 40 man roster until then too.
