The only thing that didn't go the Astros way last night was that St. Louis managed to eek out a victory over the Cubs, 4-3. Otherwise, the baseball gods were really working their magic for the Astros. After falling behind 2-0 nothing, the Astros went on an offensive tear that was enabled by some laughable defense from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins managed to tear the cover off the ball initially and then manage to not let the Phillies come back and held out to win 10-8. Finally, the reason that everyone in the Astros clubhouse should all be pitching in money to buy a refrigerated crate of Cristal: the Reds. Who almost lost the game on the strength of a Ray Durham 3-run shot in the 7th. It went into extra innings and in the 11th, after issuing a free pass to Votto, Seth McLung gave up a RBI single to Brandon Phillips, who had just had a ball ricochet off of his hand. Cordero held on for the save. After a night full of nothing but good -- just about -- here are your NL Wild Card Standings:
What seemed impossible a month ago and seemed just a little too improbable a week ago, now looks doable. Still 14 back in the elimination column, we have a scant four game gap to make up over our final 17. The leap frogging contest got a lot easier for us last night, too. 1/2 a game and 1 game; gaps which could easily be closed after tonight's action.
What do the odds have for this morning?

The play off odds have gotten markedly better across the board, simple as that. I've decided to nix the BPro PECOTA Adjusted odds, because at this point the guys they have on the field aren't the ones that PECOTA is adjusting. Some of you may note the addition of Sports Club Stats 50/50 and Weighted to the club today. While the percentages aren't the far off from Cool Standings and BPro's unadjusted odds, I like the two different ways that they run the simulations. Also, you can look at some sweet graphs like this one:
Those are our probabilities, day by day, of making the post-season throughout the season. Can anyone spot the month of May on the graph?
Here's a quick look at all of our opponents in the Wild Card race's match-ups:
What everyone needs to pray to the baseball gods for today is:

Evan Hochschild - September 10, 2008
0-0 in the 2nd in Milwaukee
Arroyo and Sabathia through two without any hits.
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
Sabathia struck out Votto in the 3rd
to strand the bases loaded with two outs.
Stupid Votto.
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
What would be neat
would be the first derivative of that graph. That would show when the team was playing well and when it wasn’t.
Xan - September 10, 2008
well
i’m assuming that the difference between this graph and a graph of win percentage, would be the standings of the teams around us, so the first derivative would really be more of an indication of how well the Astros were playing relative to everybody else.
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
It'd still be a cool graph
Just to quantify the amount of luck that is going into us climbing back into contention.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
Brewers take the early lead
Craig Counsel reached 3rd on a throwing error from Jay Bruce, trying to throw behind him at 1st on a flyball out in short right. Ball goes into the stands and Counsel makes it all the way around to 3rd. CC helps his cause with a chopper to 2nd, scoring Counsel (unearned run).
1-0 Beermakers after three.
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
Damnit.
I can’t believe Votto choked so hard.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
Homerun Hairston
Reds up 3-1 in the 5th!
Xan - September 10, 2008
I love you Jerry.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
HUGE double play
started by the Reds shortstop, to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam.
Xan - September 10, 2008
You're quicker than me.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
lol
Sorry. :-)
Xan - September 10, 2008
Reds had 1st and 3rd no outs
in the 6th, but CC got out of it with no further damage.
still 3-1 Reds going to the bottom of the 6th. Sabathia sitting at 93 pitches, but Yost will obviously give him at least 40 more to get through a few more innings.
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
He's thrown 93 or 94 pitches though.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
Surely, the Brewers bullpen must be tired.
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
And depressed.
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
lol
Salomon Torres
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
Votto K's swinging for the third time today...
Stephen Higdon - September 10, 2008
Dammit!
Score is now 3-2 Reds
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
DAMMIT!
The Brewers have bases loaded with no outs! This won’t end well. :(
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
Double play...
But the runner scores. 3-3 tie now… could have been worse, i guess. There is still a runner at third.
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
fuck.
It’s 4-3 Brewers now. Reds are gonna lose.
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
Stupid Weathers
why couldn’t he not suck just for just this game for us?
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
Torres in to close it.
There is no way he’s going lose it for the third day in a row.
He has the law of averages on his side.
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
Stupid Castillo
whoever he is…
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
Florida just took over the lead in the Phillies game.
2-1 in the 2nd, i think.
entropic soul - September 10, 2008

littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
Reds lose.
Were one inning away from a sweep!!! Dammit!
entropic soul - September 10, 2008
Phrased more unpleasantly: Brewers win 4-3
Joe in Birmingham - September 10, 2008
Stupid Dickerson
Man… was it too much to ask for a sweep?
littlevisigoth - September 10, 2008
No. Absolutely not.
