Bud Selig Shows Compassion (Makes Excuses) to Houston

I hadn't seen this before today so I figured it was worth mentioning... Bud Selig in an attempt to make himself feel better about screwing the Astros out of 2 home games, took out a full page add in the Chronicle and had this to say.

On Behalf of Major League Baseball, I want to express my profound sorrow to those of you who suffered through the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ike.  It was a horrific storm and all of us at Major League Baseball are aware of the enormity of it and the destruction and displacement that it caused.  While it is insignificant in comparison to the havoc that was taking place in Southeast Texas, the storm also created a scheduling dilemma for Major League Baseball.

And obviously the scheduling dilemma was more of an issue to MLB than the devastation in Southeast Texas..

Lance Berkman has this to say... From here

"Major League Baseball has always valued the dollar more than they do the individual, the players and their families.  That’s illustrated in things like playing through a lightning storm in Chicago (on Aug. 4).

Tom Ziller from SportingNews.com made this comment.

If the 'Stros did request postponing the game 'til the end of the season and Selig rejected that in favor of the Milwaukee move, that's just atrocious decision-making by MLB. Don't blame Cubs fans for the pair of losses, but it's easy to surmise Astro minds were a bit preoccupied last weekend. Baseball probably wasn't the most important endeavor.

Lance about summed it up

Drayton and Bud can kiss my skinny, white, ass.

Tom Ziller gets my vote for Sports Writer of the year. There were a myriad of other options at Bud’s feet, but the one option that he wasn’t considering was parity and competition — something to be expected from a man who has thrived for years behind an outlandish presumed anti-trust exemption.

Losses

Ok I understand that those who play at home have the home team advantage but playing in another location regardless of the reason is not to blame for their losses. If they were good enough to win they would have and if not well…we know the rest…I like the ‘stros but honestly let’s be realistic – just because they were moved for 2 games does not warrant criticism for their losses. the team itself is responsible for them not the location or venue that they played in. Lets just hope that more fans see the reality of this situation instead of blaming another or others rather for the losses of an entire team…

IRT the Hurricane Drama

We see apologies about moving the team due to the hurricane and the “I’m sorry’s” for the hurricane. People let’s face it…in this area we GET Hurricanes…it’s a natural fact of nature…everyone is so bent about the stros moving rather than postponing the games…look honestly regardless of hurricanes and earthquakes and the like the show does go on…remember Katrina? All those displaced? The rest of the country moved along as if nothing happened so we all need to quit whining. The thoughts and prayers for those in need are there but in reality life goes on…don’t like it? Oh well it’s an opinion and we all know what those are like and this is my reality as a newspaper editor in the stros area of reign…

Thanks for your input
Help an out of towner Astros fan understand

Ok. So I read these articles. I don’t understand all this backlash against the Astros for being whiners, especially Berkman. The quote in this article was from AUGUST 4th, well before the notorious “Wrigley North” games.

Why is everyone saying that the Astros are still howling about this? I haven’t heard anything for a week or more! Seems like the article provided a great opportunity for everyone to bash on the Astros unfairly.

And what players wore the t-shirts? It just says “some players.” I would like to know if the bashing on Lance is warranted. I don’t see it unless he was wearing the t-shirt.

Just know

That the mainstream media hates the Astros.

Confirmed my suspicions

I guess I get a greater % representation of the national media because I don’t live in the Houston area. Even listening to XM, there was virtually no support for the Astros during the whole Wrigley North fiasco (Save Steiner and Tarico (sp?).

What gives? Why does the national media want to bash on the ’Stros? If anything, they should be supportive of the area and the team. No one bashed the Saints during Katrina.
