Pedro Martinez to Houston Rumors

****Update*****: The Baseball Prospectus writer who threw out the Pedro rumor last night issued a mea culpa this morning. He said, in part:

I caught wind of the possibility Martinez was going to sign with the Astros early in the evening and it kept getting stronger and stronger the more I checked it out. I felt so strongly that the information was correct that I went with it. As it turned out, the sources I checked it with had also been the recipient of misinformation.

So, it looks like there will just be one future Hall of Famer signed this week.

Baseball Prospectus said he was close to becoming an Astro, last night.

Today, JJO reports that there will be no Pedro.

Hmmm...this day keeps getting weirder.

Said Ed Wade: We have had zero conversations with Pedro. I have absolutely no idea where that [the Martinez rumor] is coming from.

After Wade denied, denied, denied everything about Pudge signing, I still wouldn't be surprised if something was going on.

on the astrosdaily board...

someone said that 790 AM in Houston was saying this morning that Pedro Martinez is likely to join Pudge on the Astros. I didn’t hear it, and so I can’t say whether that is an accurate description or not. So, if someone hears it, you might tell us.

As I said in previous comment, I wouldn’t totally discount the BPro rumor, despite JJO’s and Footer’s statements. It may well be unlikely, but Wade has shown the ability to have a poker bluff in his press statements. JJO’s comments appear to be based upon Drayton confirming that the press conference isn’t about Pedro Martinez. BPro never said that the press conference had anything to do with their rumor…that is a conclusion we drew, given the timing of the press conference.

this just seems like a very "Drayton" moment

to sign someone like Pedro. With the bad news coming from Aaron Boone, the business man in McLane may think that this is as good a time as any to shake things up further, and get some publicity for his team. The “butts in seats” principle.

well thats got to be a shitty feeling
