Astros take 2-0 lead on consecutive sac flies, after loading bases with

no outs in 1st inning. Should have been more, but it’s better than nothing with the way things have been going. Lee came close to a bases clearing double, but Morgan’s great speed allowed him to catch the ball near the wall in spacious LF.

more detail...

Bourn is lead off hitter and gets BB. Tejada and Berkman with consecutive singles. Sac flies by Lee and Pence….both well hit.

I'm guessing the Bourn lead-off

is because of Matsui’s back?

I hope Bourn can show he belongs at the top…I don’t like Tejada @ the 2-spot…I like (a healthy) Matsui there much better.

Keppinger in place of Matsui tonight

Putting Kepp in against lefties has worked out really really well. It’ll be interesting to see him up against RHP tonight.

If anyone is watching the game, be sure to let us “radio-only” folks know how Keppinger fares defensively at 2B.

Broadcasters announced that Alberto Arias has been called up.

I’m surprised it is him instead of Paulino. I’m a big Arias backer, but he had horrendous BB problems in his first RR start. However, he has been darned near unhittable in the spring and for Round Rock.

Hampton gets 2 outs quickly in 1st.

But McLouth with a well hit LD to RF…but Pence holds him to single.

And Hampton induces a groundout to Blum. End 1st.
Wait.

Mike Bourn drew a lead-off walk?

Keppinger double.

drive over Morgan’s head just off his glove as he heads toward wall. I-Rod was out on a scorching line drive to 3d base man. About as hard hit as you will see for an out.

Hampton with sharp groundout to 3d base.
Ohlendorf's pitch count rising quickly tonight
Bourn strikes out with 3 swings and misses.

Poor at bat for Michael.

guess I jinxed him
Hampton's at bat looked a lot better than his.
Hampton with a quick 2d inning.

Two consecutive fly balls—medium depth—to LF and CF. Then Andy LaRoche hit a nubber down 1st base line, and Hampton made a nice defensive play to get to the ball before it went out and whirl and toss to 1st base.

Is this what it’s like to hear good play-by-play?

Just kidding…I don’t mind Dolan and Raymond, I find them likeable guys, and usually better than opposing teams’ broadcasts…but then again, I was never spoiled with Vin Scully or Milo in his prime

It's raining by the way. Cold and wet.
Tejada rips a grounder to left side for a hit.

3d baseman knocked it down, but it dribble into LF.

Berkman doubles.

Fast and high LD which looked like it might be a HR…but it barely stayed in yard.

Lee rips a double for 2 RBI.

Well hit to LF, got there too fast even for Morgan.

4-0 Astros is the score.
Single by Pence...runners on corners. No outs.

Not well hit but it bounced between 3d baseman and shortstop.

popu up by Blum and Pirates get an out.
Pudge hits into DP.
Channeling Ausmus, I see
Hampton gets his first K

he’s dealin now

Hampton strikes out the side.
Hampton gets his first K...of Vazquez.

His pitches look fairly good so far. Good command. Lots of downward action.

Well hit line drive by Keppinger...but it goes for out.

Morgan makes a running catch in LF.

Pirates are playing Keppinger in a bit on the outfield.

And he has hit the ball over outfielder’s head twice now…once for double and now caught by Morgan.

Bourn lines out for 3d out.
is this the hampton...

of old that we love back in the late 90’s? He looks tonight like the bull dog ….with Moehler down we need the other Vets in the rotation to pick it up

I get the sense of determination by the veterans.

Lance and Carlos are just hammering the ball. Hampton is channeling a bit of his old days.

:)

yes Hampy looks great!!

sounds like the day off helped them regain some composure
LF

Morgan is pretty speedy out there in left for the Pirates….or am I just jaded watching Carlos

he is very fast. almost Bourn fast.
The Puma

outstanding play by the Puma at first…diving stop of a liner down the line

Geat diving catch by Puma.

Seeing it again, it is outstanding. Cat quick, which is appropriate for Puma.

In Round Rock, Capellan should be starting for the Express tonight.

In Lexington, Lyles got tagged with his first loss as the Legends lost 6-0. Lyles allowed 1 ER over 3.2 innings. 2 walks, 8 strikeouts.

wow

that’s a Clemens loss right there.

Hampton with 2 Ks and 1 BB in this inning...end of 4th.
Bottom 4th

Sanchez lines out to Berkman
McLouth walks on 5 pitches
Doumit strikes out looking
LaRoche, also strikes out looking, but does so with a 9-pitch at-bat

Tejada with double.

McLouth tried to dive for it and it got past him. He had no shot at getting it. Not a smart play…even though it might have been a double anyway.

Berkman with grounder to 2d...moves up Tejada to 3d.
Lee K's on breaking pitch.
Pence with grounder to 3d.
Tejada tearing it up!!!!
I wonder if Fulchino or Arias will be the starter?

Brownie is guessing Fulchino on Sunday…but it is not certain yet.

I know I’d rather see if Arias can handle the starting role, but those in the know seem to think he’s bullpen material.

Arias and Fulchino both pitched roughly the same number of innings (~2 IP) down in RR last week, but Fulchino started the game and Arias came in relief.

If Brocail projects to be on the DL longer than Moehler, I guess it’s not a bad idea to put Arias in the bullpen, because there’s the chance that he’ll get to face more major league batters over the long run, which may do more to help his development

Arias was in RR's starting rotation...

he came in as a reliever because they removed Fulchino after 2 innings after it was known he would be called up.

Monroe with lead off single.
Andy LaRoche with well hit liner to Pence.
K no. 6 for Hampy...Vazquez this time. Big breaking pitch.
Pudge throws out Monroe as he tries to advance on loose ball.
Still 4-0

Bottom of 6th.

single followed by K of Morgan.

Unhittable slider to Morgan.

I have to run an errand, get some food, etc. So I won’t update for awhile.

appeal bring a K of Sanchez...8th K for Hampton.
broken bat roller just past Berkman for single.

Berkman was distracted by flying bat pieces, apparently.

Shuttin' them out through seven!
Impossible catch by Pittsburgh's Morgan in left

to rob Pudge of a sure double

Astros win 4-1

Ends on Berkman catching a line drive and tagging first for a double play.

Pirates score one on a home run in the ninth to break up the shutout..

Hampton is the player of the game.

Great Game...

I am so happy for Hampton 8 K’s most since 03’. Good defensive plays by Berkman to round it all out. In a game that was 40 degrees at one point, The Astros chill the spine of Ohlendorf.

As I said earlier....

You got the feeling from the beginning of this game that the veteran players like Berkman, Tejada, and Hampton were very serious about stopping the losing streak. Hampton was living back in 1999, and hitters were looking to move batters over, hit sacrifice flies, and the like…things they weren’t doing in previous games.

The most encouraging thing from this game is Hampton’s performance. Can Hampton repeat this type of pitching time after time this year? Heck, I don’t know. But if he can, that was be huge.

too bad I didn't get to see

the game where the Houston team DIDN’T get screwed by the officiating.

Hampton...

is a player who I want to watch alot of this year, I have a strong feeling that he is going to turn some heads. Expect some more gems from him.
