Astros at Hooks Game Thread

I can't find a boxscore anywhere, but the pitching matchup is Wandy Rodriguez vs. Felipe Paulino...Astros are up 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.

The public address system

plays N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” after an out by the opposing team. Nice.

Crowd favorite Hunter Pence smokes an RBI double...

scoring Tejada who doubled in his AB. 2-0 Astros

wow, reggie walked
Smith singles, reggie goes to 3rd

Q singles, but Einertson commits an error, bringing both runners home and letting Q get to third.

einertson is one of the few guys on the Hooks roster who qualifies for "prospect" status, probably

so I’m eager to see what he can do. Too bad I didn’t get back until the 8th.

and berkman gets an RBI

bloop single behind the ss.

Keppinger singles to right, getting Berkman over to third. pretty bad pitch, too.

it’s comforting that the Astros aren’t losing to their AA team

Chris Johnson lines one to short

2 out

Hunter Pence is apparently "Bam Bam"

appropriate.

chops one past the mound

but an easy force out at second

Andrew Locke

homers off of Capellan.

feeling… conflicted.

some info

Locke is 26 and a pickup from the Dodgers in the minor league portion of the Rule V draft. He was very good in high-A, but that might be expected of a guy significantly older than his opponents.

Capellan walks Florentino
Capellan almost beans Van Ostrand in the head

seems a bit wild right now.

walks him

Capellan has walked 5 hitters.

Capellan gets the next strikeout

he’s got the stuff tonight, but not the control.

lou santangelo

able to get on. Possibly a throwing error, but I doubt it (the ball got very deep into the hole, and the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag)

reggie up to bat

and, despite what the announcers are saying (they think he definitely needs to play everyday) I really think the Astros should just give the guy a shot. If Bourn falters, we’ve shown that they’d benefit from a platoon in center. If Bourn doesn’t, I’d rather have Reggie than Erstad.

He's put up great numbers this spring

I don’t know why we don’t just pursue a true platoon on Bourn and Abercrombie…it makes NO sense.

I'd like to think it's because Bourn has shown a lot of progress

I mean, his walk rate is very good, so maybe Bourn won’t need it.

Jason smith singles
Q bounces into a double play

still 5-4 ’stros. Bottom of the 9th coming up.

chris salamida (sp?) takes the mound for the Astros

lefty wearing #13. Maybe he can channel some wagner.

einertson singles into left

cool, but also bad, I guess.

Game over

Episito (sp?) with the walk HR.

Brian Esposito

hits a walk-off two-run homer. A victory for career minor leaguers everywhere

fun facts about Esposito
On July 14, 2008, Esposito was one of two catchers to take the mound and get a decision in the second game of a Texas League doubleheader. He threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, from the 11th through the 13th, to get the win for the Tulsa Drillers over the Springfield Cardinals. The losing “pitcher” was Matt Pagnozzi, his fellow backstop on the 2007 Memphis Redbirds.

Wandy apparently had 11 strikeouts

good job, Wandy. Beating up on minor leaguers still takes a lot of skill.

At least the guys that lost the game

Are guys who are not going to be on the team. :p
