straight steal of home in Yankees-Red Sox series.
This isn’t relevant to this article, but I’ll post it here anyway.
I was lukewarm on watching another Yankees-Red Sox game on ESPN last night. But I’m glad I did, for no other reason than I got to see a straight steal of home, which is an exciting play, but fairly unusual.
Pettitte, a lefty, on the mound had his back to 3d. Ellsbury was on 3d base. As soon as Pettitte went into his delivery, Ellsbury dashed for home. He was more than halfway home as Pettitte delivered the ball. He was sliding just a fraction of a second after the ball crossed the plate. Posada obviously didn’t see Ellsbury and was surprised. He attempted to tag Ellsbury as he slid across the plate in front of him, but it was too late. This generated a tremendous crowd reaction in Fenway, and seemed to be big momentum maker.

if you didn't see the steal of home...
it is at the end of the espn video clip linked here.

Glossary
It won’t explain why the entire Astros pitching staff is barely worth five dollars but here’s a glossary (and it does not contain my POG and NOG either – Astros POG-NOG now is 0-4 – not good)

yea, i tried to look up how they determine the dollar values
but it wasn’t in their glossary like you said. i just thought it was interesting how they put it to a dollar amount. i would guess contract values and on field performance are the two factors that go into the determination..

Astros POG-NOG is 1-6
I forgot a few games
Joe in Birmingham - April 27, 2009
Truly amazing.
Only_A_Lad - April 27, 2009
I mean, really
FOUR GAMES across a whole season? wow.
Only_A_Lad - April 27, 2009
I know Carlos Lee does not cover much territory
But does the fact so many balls hit in his direction bounce off the wall hurt his numbers?
Joe in Birmingham - April 27, 2009
That's an interesting point
And I hope so. Seriously four games in less than 20…there’s something that just doesn’t compute in my head.
Stephen Higdon - April 27, 2009
that's UZR/150
so…. he hasn’t lost 4 games for the Astros right now. But if he continues on this pace, then he will.
Only_A_Lad - April 27, 2009
Sorry
My brain feels like mush a little bit. I was so confused.
Stephen Higdon - April 27, 2009
think about how bad you'd have to be
to have a -40 UZR in less than 20 games. Give up a double on every ball hit in your direction?
Only_A_Lad - April 27, 2009
I know
I was just overwhelmed by the number as it was rendered in my head.
Stephen Higdon - April 27, 2009
perhaps
I remember some discussion about Manny’s UZR improving after he left Fenway.
Beyond that, it’s important to remember that these numbers should stabilize as the season continues. I just find it amusing that his UZR is so abysmal right now.
Only_A_Lad - April 27, 2009
I don't know if MGL adjusts for MMP's LF or not....
I’ve asked him that at one time, but I can’t remember the answer. If it’s not adjusted, then you can add something like +8 to Lee’s UZR/150 (it’s still bad, even with that). I think that is an adjustment number that CHONE came up with at one time. It reflects the fact that the raw data can’t distinguish balls off the LF wall which are uncatchable. I think the same kind of adjustment for Manny at Fenway was +10 or something. The only significant outfield wall adjustments are Anaheim, MMP, and Fenway, I think.

When Lee played that one ball off the wall perfectly
against the Brewers, my thought was that Manny and Carlos would make a good matchup at billiards.
ol Pete - April 27, 2009
yeah, he's gotten really good at that
it’s pretty difficult, too, because the ball will routinely hit one of the scoreboard’s ridges and have a weird ricochet.
