Hearing about the best is exciting

A lot of hope there, especially for future pitching.

It’s too bad Jason Smith is tearing it up as the team’s 2nd Pinch Hitter/2nd Utility IF. Otherwise, John Gall might get a chance at the big-league level for once.

He's definitely crushing the ball

But the game I saw him play made me understand why he’s never gotten a shot. He can’t play defense. He made Prince Fielder look like Albert Pujols in that game. That was just one game, but that’s the impression I got.

What I don’t understand, is why he hasn’t got a shot as a DH for a team?

yeah, I understand he has defensive "difficulties"

but the Astros’ pinch hitting off the bench sucks. Granted, maybe it’s not worth a roster spot for a guy who might have a single PA per game, but I think a big reason why the Astros’ clutch hitting sucks (besides just poor luck) is that, when the bottom of the order gets on and the pitcher comes up, all we have is Jason Michaels (who’s hit the ball hard a few times), Darin Erstad (not a good hitter, either), Kepp/Blum (alright), and Smith.

And I just don’t see what role Smith plays on the club. His bat is awful, and his defense doesn’t really seem good, either. Kepp can play short (albeit poorly) and second, so he serves as the backup infielder pretty well.

An extra bat seems like a good idea to me. Maybe Gall doesn’t fill that roll well, but surely Wade can find something better than Smith, right?

I agree with you.

I think either Saccomano or Gall could play the PH role, and give he Astros something they don’t have right now. Between the two, Saccomano has more power, and Gall has more on base skills. Either characteristic is welcome in the PH role. Both guys are not very good defensively. Saccomano is probably worse than Gall, defensively. Gall can also play a corner outfield position if you get in a bind, like in an extra inning game. Personally, I don’t see Jason Smith adding much to the team.

Smith definitely has no role on this team

And I think Gall or Saccomano merit a role on this team. I just see why the front office is reluctant to go with either one of those I guys—not that it’s a good think.

Dydalewicz and Lo are particularly intirguing to me.

Dydalewicz, from the Austin area, was throwing 94 as a high schooler, according to what his high school coach told the Statesman at the time he was drafted by the Astros. When you take into account that he is lefthanded, that seems like super potential to me. And he hasn’t disappointed so far for the Astros.

Lo has been so dominant, I wonder if he is a canddiate to move up to AA this year. Perhaps Lo could turn out to be the home grown closer that the Astros need when Valverde is no longer on the team?

I was thinking the same thing about C. J. Lo when I saw his line today

And given that he’s getting his results in Lancaster, it’s quite possible that the front office started him off a level too low (no pun intended).

Interestingly, at Lexington, Daniel Meszaros is doing quite well at holding down the closer position. He’s young, and it’s early in the season, but check out his line:

Meszaros: 9 games, 7.1 Innings Pitched, 0 Earned Runs, 4 Hits, 1 walk, 12 strikeouts….for a miniscule WHIP of 0.68.

If both Lo and Meszaros maintain this kind of success for another month, perhaps until the June draft, I could see both of them getting moved up a level.

he is already 23 and dominating a very hitter friendly league so i don’t see why they wouldn’t let him get a taste of AA this summer like which is where most people thought he would start anyway

I’m hopin the Dydalewicz, Seaton, along with Kyle Greenwalt and Robert Bono to continue to perform well in the league.

No love for Mitch Einertson?
Einertson just missed...

the top 5 for the week. I had him as 7 for 20 with two home runs, and four RBI. Hopefully, he can have a strong second year in CC. His average is in the .290s for the season.
