The Astros were remarkably good when scoring only three runs, going 13-11 in those games. That sort of success went a long way to helping the Astros play meaningful baseball into September.

Look at that record when they score 4 runs or more
That’s only 4 runs, folks. You’d think the Astros score at least that many and give up about the same number per game.
jonthefon - April 7, 2009
that’s not what the table says at all. it says they were 13-11 when they scored three runs, and 16-6 when they allowed three runs. but alas.
the grawlrus - April 7, 2009
well....
13-11 is remarkably good, in my opinion, when scoring only 3 runs….considering the average team scores around 4.5-4.7 runs a game, a 50-55% reduction in runs scored is pretty dramatic…
Evan Hochschild - April 7, 2009
sure. i will concede this point to you, but your initial analysis is misleading.
friends? we are, after all, united by astros fandom, not by statistical analyses.
the grawlrus - April 7, 2009
of course we're friends!
i agree. i wrote something that i didn’t mean…if that makes sense. I made this post late last night, when my mind wasn’t working at full tilt..

Opponents score 10 or more runs in over 10% of games??
The chart says Astros opponents scored ten or more runs in 17 games in 2008.
That’s unacceptable for any team.
Joe in Birmingham - April 7, 2009
yeah, but we shutout the opponent or only allowed one run
28 times.

For Another Thread...
…Astros’ most hated opposing player? I’m going to have to go with Edmonds. Whether the Cardinals or the Cubbies, he killed us in the worst times with his glove AND his bat.
JEH629 - April 7, 2009
beltran
that shit’s personal.
Only_A_Lad - April 7, 2009
I'll go with
Carlos Zambrano?
-Beltran hasn’t done anything since he’s left Houston
-we’ve conquered Edmonds before
Evan Hochschild - April 7, 2009
ignore the question mark after zambrano
Evan Hochschild - April 7, 2009
I hate Zambrano, too
but I don’t get the universal resentment vibe from Astros fans about Zambrano that I do from them about Beltran. Zambrano is an asshole who helped kick the Astros while they were down. Beltran lied to the whole city and screwed up the Astros’ ability to go after other free agents in 2005.
To put it another way, the booing of Zambrano does not seem as hearty as the booing of Beltran.
Only_A_Lad - April 7, 2009
see
I dislike Zambrano purely as an athlete- his histrionics on the mound, constant wearing of his emotions of his sleeve, seems to show disrespect to the opponent. baseball is different than any other sport in that, more is expected of players in terms of respecting their opposition. it’s an unwritten rule in my mind…zambrano seems to scoff at this. and yes, I suppose you could say that I’m accusing Jose Valverde of the same thing.
Zambrano’s persona irks me perhaps more than anyone else out there…
say what you will about Edmonds and Beltran, both seem to be classy ballplayers. beltran may have lied to the city, but as we’ve seen recently with wall st, etc- lying can be part of business, as sad as that is. baseball is a business, and beltran was exercising his right as a businessman to find the best deal for him

Translation
You mean he took advantages of Houston fans to line his own pocket. I’m not saying he did anything illegal, but he does have to look himself in the mirror, and he certainly shouldn’t expect us to like it!
Xan - April 7, 2009
true
but i won’t judge another person for decisions that they make when millions of dollars are involved. of course i’d like to think that i’d be completely honest, and would even show deference to the city that i gained so much notoriety with, but i have never been in that position before.
i have competed in athletics before, so i feel slightly more able to talk about zambrano from a personal standpoint..
Evan Hochschild - April 7, 2009
having been offered millions of dollars is irrelevent
lying is wrong. Fuck him.
Only_A_Lad - April 7, 2009
yeah, he didn't do anything illegal,
but he did tell us all that he wanted to stay in Houston. Turns out, he was just playing us for suckers to increase his potential contract offerings from the Yankees and (when that didn’t materialize) the Mets. I – and the rest of Astros fans, probably – wouldn’t have a problem with him if he had been honest.
And Beltran does seem like a classy ballplayer on the field, and there’s no reason to believe he’s anything else. But I’ve rarely seen hitters gloat on the field the way pitchers can on the mound. Hitters who do that seem to get beaned a lot.
No, the hate for Beltran, to me, is twofold: first, he lied to us. Second, he lied to us to go play somewhere that doesn’t particularly like him. New Yorkers boo him whenever he hits .250, while Houston fans absolutely adored the guy while he was here. It’s not simply that he left – it’s that he spurned us for a city whose press treats him like the Mets’ version of A-Rod and whose fans don’t appreciate how great of a player he is.
Put simply, Zambrano is just some asshole we have to deal with a couple of times a year. Beltran is the girl who left you for some rich douchebag.
Valverde’s celebration on the mound is… not entirely classy. But I guess he saves it for after a save, so it’s not really egregious or anything.
Only_A_Lad - April 7, 2009
For what it's worth...
the Astros scored three runs yesterday against the Cubs en route to the win..
