First of all....Ted Lilly's full name is Theodore Roosevelt Lilly. Sorta cool. Too bad Teddy Roosevelt was 100 times the man Ted Lilly will ever be. Roosevelt led his volunteer regiment known as The Rough Riders up San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War.
Ted Lilly, on the other hand, is 3-1 against the Astros all time, 2.52 ERA, and 7.8 K/9...child's play in comparison to his namsake.
Brian Moehler it's your time to shine. Was last year a fluke? Or will Mr. Moehler continue his hot spring tonight against the Cubs?
DQ and I both have class tonight, so if we aren't able to enter in the lineup before game time, our apologies..Regardless, this would be a nice series to win. Get 'em Moehler!

Milo Hamilton day...
so he’s retiring after this year, right? Or did he delay it again?
Not to beat on the guy too much or anything.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I Think
He most recently said 2012. No joke.
hunterpencefan - April 8, 2009
gonna be a while before I can find out the inning and count
in a home radio broadcast.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Why is Cecil Cooper like a dentist?
because he may pull out a Moehler tonight.
Yes-it’s been a long day and I’m brain dead.
Joe in Birmingham - April 8, 2009
still a good pun, though

Astros plan for 2009:
Oswalt and Wandy and then pray for rain.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
soriano smacks a hit into right
and Fukodome is batting 2nd.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009

Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
weird
like 4 guys give Soriano the high 5
ol Pete - April 8, 2009
JD Mentions the exploding bats
and Bill James has a comment about this in his 2009 gold mine. Essentially, he thinks that the league should mandate a greater minimum bat width, which should both decrease the number of shattered bats and decrease power hitting. Might be interesting, and I’m inclined to agree. It would make slugging a much more special thing, certainly.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
well, scuffy's walked Bradley
bases loaded, no outs.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009

"The good news in the national league is sooner or later you have to face the pitcher"
Thank you, JD. I laughed pretty hard at that.

holy shit
way to start a season off right moehler
captain_bomb_2000 - April 8, 2009
this is going to be one of those outlier games
Andy wrote about, I think.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Maybe outlier inning.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
alright, DP Berkman-Pudge
no run scores!
Still only 4-0
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Gamecast can't keep up...
it’s still on Ramirez.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Almost all the Cubs hits
have been weak hits
Joe in Birmingham - April 8, 2009
Big discussion over at you know where on how lucky the Astros were to win last night. Dempster did really well, but Wandy who is a mediocre junk baller was very lucky. The number of dribbler hits and broken bats was the main evidence. I especially liked the view that the ball by Pudge off of Ramirez’s glove was weak and lucky. Kepp’s walk off was a joke you know.
ol Pete - April 8, 2009
ah, cubs fans
the class of the NL Central
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I thought broken bats meant...
nevermind. Not going there.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Did they say
how lucky Cubs were to score this inning?
(I beat guy two sets in tennis a month ago. Afterward he told me my tennis game wasn’t very good and I needed to play with a friend of his to improve. I reminded him I just beat him two sets. He said I still wasn’t very good.)
Joe in Birmingham - April 8, 2009
I only read it later once in a while. But I’m sure there are different adjectives that would be used.

TexSkins - April 8, 2009
soft fly ball to center
for Puma
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Berkman flies out to center.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
carlos puts a good swing on the ball
but flies out to soriano, who does his stupid little hop thing.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Interesting lineup...
Kepp in the 2, which I think suits him well. Pudge down to the 7 hole.
Bourn, who has been hitting the ball well and getting unlucky at times (the liner to left that Soriano caught, the swinging bunt) still in the 8 spot.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Bourn has the 2nd highest average...
of the guys who have started all 3 games. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Kepp snags a line drive from dickbag
flat out snags it
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Did he do the Eyes Closed thing afterward?
I liked him after he did that in the ST game at Minute Maid.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009

"we've switched the Astros pitching staff

Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
That didn't take long
surprised Coop already moved Pudge down the order.
Sigh… 8-0 huh?

Its cracking me up, Milo Hamilton is interviewing NASA Commander Archibald — guiys keeps saying he grew up in Chicago and is a huge Cubs fan. Needless to say Milo is not happy.
Haha How sweeeeeet it is…
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
yeah, y'all keep showing up down here for jobs
sorry your economy sucks
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
i mean, I know the space industry is limited in Chicago
but damn
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Why I hate going to Cubs/Dodgers game in Houston, seems like it’s 50/50 in the stadium.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
Not argument there
Maybe you guys should stop being so welcoming. Geez first Katrina now the Midwest expansion.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
Southern Hospitability
Suck it.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
And I really mean it
My comment came off pretty snarky, I should have previewed first. Not cool for me to say stuff like that considering the game circumstances.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
Eh
It’s just one game out of 162. We’re bound to be embarrassed in a few of them. It’s cool.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
it's alright,
my comment was innapropriate. Still, we tend to get tired of implications of “Wrigley South lol.” Tends to piss me off.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
But it's true
Houston’s economy is still going relatively strong compared to the rest of the nation. As long as oil still runs through this nation we’ll be alright. Why I can’t wait to graduate and come back.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
Well thats good
As I recall there were quite a few misplaced souls who ended up in Houston after Katrina. I would have thought that might have hurt the employment numbers
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
It was tough
But Houston is still a very successful city during the recession. I was there for Spring Break and you wouldn’t believe the amount of new construction still going on downtown. I must’ve saw 5 new/being built high-rises alone.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
it's an intriguing phenomenon
probably caused by an abundance of land and absence of regulations on the housing market. So we didn’t get hit as hard by the bubble collapse.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Dude
Any ballpark outside of NY or Boston, can easily get a ton of “Cubs fans” most of them see a few games a year on TV and pull out their old smelly [insert popular Cub player here] jersey. They are the same guys that piss me off during game getting up every inning for another beer.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
Or those
who threw on White Sox caps in the 2005 Series. Not true Cubs fans, only root for the winners.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
Or root
For losers because its a great excuse to get dicked up at a baseball game. Trust me, I deal with these guys all the time. At Wrigley they call them “Chad with the cell phone”.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
Sorry guys
didn’t mean for it to come out that way.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
Hey
at least San Antonio is losing.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
kickass!
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
ugh
Ortiz and Moehler are making Fukodome look good
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Moehler's ERA
37.80
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
fantastic
I imagine the temptation to bring sandpaper to the ballpark is pretty heavy for Moehler right about now.
Ball: “Scuff me, Brian”
Scuffy: No, no. They told me I can’t. They’ll ban me if I do it again.
Ball: C’mon, Brian. It feels so good and you know it makes you better.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
+100
Just laughed in the library. People are staring.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
Ball: I won't tell if you don't, Brian.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
I like that Moehler is sitting on the bench, watching,
as opposed to sulking in the clubhouse.
Joh - April 8, 2009
yeah, that's a good sign
but Moehler’s been through worse.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Mid 3...
8-0.
Cubs only on pace for 24.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Well Thank God

End 3. 8-2 Cubs.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Good inning
Let’s string a few more of those together and turn it into a game
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
Who does color
with Milo for you guys?
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
either
Dave Raymond or Brett Dolan
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
dolan, I think does color for both
Raymond calls games on the road
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I could use me some more of that guy
And less of the “not-so-celebrity” interviews. Not that I’m lovin the homerun calls on my end, but Hamilton barely broke the interview to call them.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
We have a smiliar problem
in Pat Hughes and Ron Santo, they do an interview during the Bottom 6th and Top 7th, and its really a waste.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
I love Santo's calls...
super homer and he doesn’t care who knows it.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Yeah
He is what he is, but eventually I think they need to move on to a true color man who brings more than just anecdotal analysis to the table — ala Bob Brenly
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
If you get a chance...
check out JD, who does the Astros TV color. He’s really good and I’m not just saying that because I’m an Astros fan.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Cool, will do
I always like watching for good broadcasting talent…too bad there isn’t more of it.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
I live in Dallas...
the TV guys here are terrible.
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
I like Palmer in Baltimore...
who else… ?
TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Well for radio
I enjoy me some Dave O’Brien for the Bo Sox (don’t listen often but he is good). Dan Galdden is pretty decent 2nd guy for the Twins. I like Rick Monday on the Dodgers broadcast. Guys that suck: Thom Brennaman for Cincy (His dad is worse tho) and Suzyn Waldman for the Yankees (horrible). Speaking of Palmer, Buck Martinez does a good job when Jim is off as well.
StevenABQ - April 9, 2009
yeah, Hamilton isn't the best
he doesn’t really call the game anymore, preferring to do interviews or talk about whatever. It’s impossible to find out the count when he’s calling the game. The road games are better, since Raymond does them.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I wouldn't have a problem with him
Except for he really does hold a grudge against the Cubs for losing the job to Harry C. back in the day.
StevenABQ - April 8, 2009
yeah,
he hated Carray, absolutely loathed him.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
Wouldn't you too?
That “Space the Infinite Frontier” gig was SWEET.

TexSkins - April 8, 2009
Some more good news
San AN has blown a 19 point lead and is down by 9 now.
Rockets share lead in division!
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
cool
I like their chances against the Kings tomorrow
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
You got to
They have a real chance to win out and get HCA (I know this should move to The Dream Shake)
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
whatever
the best part? They could win their first division title since 1994.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
1994
I think we did pretty good that year right?
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
yeah, I think so.
Something about some playoff victories or something, right?
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I think
but it might’ve been Riley who said “heart of a champion.” Right after he slicked some more pomade into his hair.
chrisjay84 - April 8, 2009
sounds about right
Another one of Ewing’s many championships, as I recall.
(Seriously, I was about 5 when they won in 1994. I remember watching them in the finals against the knicks while they cut away to the OJ chase. I was over at my cousin’s while my mom was at work. We had one of those Little Caesar’s BigFoot pizzas they used to sell.)
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I was 9
And I remember wishing on a star that the Rockets won Game 7. God I was so stupid.

Ok better way to get at what I wanted
Was Moehler just leaving them fat, or what?
Stephen Higdon - April 8, 2009
at first
he was making his pitches, and the Cubs were just making good contact and slapping them into the outfield. But he lost his control pretty quickly and just sucked after about the 4-0 point.
Only_A_Lad - April 8, 2009
I wasn't watching then...

win expectancy
essentially, because several hundred thousand baseball games have been played since the 1870s, we know what the expected number of runs scored in a given situation is. So we can say what the likelihood of a team winning the game is. It’s pretty cool stuff, really.
