First of all....Ted Lilly's full name is Theodore Roosevelt Lilly. Sorta cool. Too bad Teddy Roosevelt was 100 times the man Ted Lilly will ever be. Roosevelt led his volunteer regiment known as The Rough Riders up San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War.

Ted Lilly, on the other hand, is 3-1 against the Astros all time, 2.52 ERA, and 7.8 K/9...child's play in comparison to his namsake.

Brian Moehler it's your time to shine. Was last year a fluke? Or will Mr. Moehler continue his hot spring tonight against the Cubs?

DQ and I both have class tonight, so if we aren't able to enter in the lineup before game time, our apologies..Regardless, this would be a nice series to win. Get 'em Moehler!

stros going

matsui
keppinger
berk
lee
tejada
pence
pudge
bourn
moehler

i sorta like this lineup vs Lefties…

vs righties we should go

matsui
pence
berk
lee
tejada
blum
pudge
bourn
pitcher…

these lineups on normal days. (meaning if erstad is subbed in 1 day bcz coop wants to rest lee a lil) im just talking a reg. day

basically

v.s righties – pence bats 2 blum 6
v.s lefties – pence bats 6 keppinger 2

Milo Hamilton day...

so he’s retiring after this year, right? Or did he delay it again?

Not to beat on the guy too much or anything.

I Think

He most recently said 2012. No joke.

gonna be a while before I can find out the inning and count

in a home radio broadcast.

what's with the Wizard of Oz Dorothy outfit?
pigtails and everything, too
Joe In Birmingham

dont jynx our pitching… Save that for the BCB blog.

What...

are you watching Lad?

sho thing

nothin’ better to do on a Wednesday night.

ah, I see

I’m watching the FSN Houston broadcast it’s the nat’l anthem

aramis ramirez has the most rbi

of an opposing hitter in MMP. huh. I’d expected either Bonds or Pujols

Let's go Moehl-Man!

Stop telling me that...

the game isn’t on for me yet…

"The Dentist"

Brian Moehler, which uhh… working title.

I don't like it as much as "Scuffy."
Astros plan for 2009:

Oswalt and Wandy and then pray for rain.

soriano smacks a hit into right

and Fukodome is batting 2nd.

right up the middle
weird

like 4 guys give Soriano the high 5

JD Mentions the exploding bats

and Bill James has a comment about this in his 2009 gold mine. Essentially, he thinks that the league should mandate a greater minimum bat width, which should both decrease the number of shattered bats and decrease power hitting. Might be interesting, and I’m inclined to agree. It would make slugging a much more special thing, certainly.

well, scuffy's walked Bradley

bases loaded, no outs.

Kinda glad I'm not watching right now...

It’s like watching someone smoking while filling their car with gas… scary.

it's always like that with Moehler

and it’s fascinating

Your one of those drivers...

who slows down for accidents, huh?

liner to left

RBI for Aramis Ramirez

Five Cubs reach base

and nobody out

Everyone boo ^ this man.
Joe In Birmingham

jynxes Astros pitching… Good job guy

roller right past the mound

no play
3-0

looks like

we’re going to have to actually hit tonight

rbi theriot

4-0

Christ, scuffy.

Breaking News...

Coop goes tot he mound and not only takes Moehler out of the game, but sends him to RR.

"The good news in the national league is sooner or later you have to face the pitcher"

Thank you, JD. I laughed pretty hard at that.

holy shit

way to start a season off right moehler

this is going to be one of those outlier games

Andy wrote about, I think.

Maybe outlier inning.
alright, DP Berkman-Pudge

no run scores!
Still only 4-0

Gamecast can't keep up...

it’s still on Ramirez.

Almost all the Cubs hits

have been weak hits

Big discussion over at you know where on how lucky the Astros were to win last night. Dempster did really well, but Wandy who is a mediocre junk baller was very lucky. The number of dribbler hits and broken bats was the main evidence. I especially liked the view that the ball by Pudge off of Ramirez’s glove was weak and lucky. Kepp’s walk off was a joke you know.

ah, cubs fans

the class of the NL Central

I thought broken bats meant...

nevermind. Not going there.

Did they say

how lucky Cubs were to score this inning?

(I beat guy two sets in tennis a month ago. Afterward he told me my tennis game wasn’t very good and I needed to play with a friend of his to improve. I reminded him I just beat him two sets. He said I still wasn’t very good.)

I only read it later once in a while. But I’m sure there are different adjectives that would be used.

c'mon, scuffy

get it together

gamecast sucks

probably on purpose so you’ll buy the expensive package…thanks mlb

And...

MLB is still holding out on Sirius. So those of us in law school in Philly (shithole) has to watch yahoo reload.

Switching to GameChannel.
full count to lilly

thank god

whew

groundout

Mid of 1st...

4 runs on 6 hits… and 1 banned TCB regular (Sorry Joe.)

Matsui grounds out to 3rd...

or so GameChannel says.

Everyone went quiet.
didn't want to jinx him
THANKS, JOE.
base hit Kepp!

Sweet.

Kepp keeps his 1.000 average...

singles to left.

soft fly ball to center

for Puma

Berkman flies out to center.
carlos puts a good swing on the ball

but flies out to soriano, who does his stupid little hop thing.

Interesting lineup...

Kepp in the 2, which I think suits him well. Pudge down to the 7 hole.

Bourn, who has been hitting the ball well and getting unlucky at times (the liner to left that Soriano caught, the swinging bunt) still in the 8 spot.

Bourn has the 2nd highest average...

of the guys who have started all 3 games. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

Kepp snags a line drive from dickbag

flat out snags it

Did he do the Eyes Closed thing afterward?

I liked him after he did that in the ST game at Minute Maid.

Top 2...

Soriano leading off his 2nd consecutive inning.

Lines out to Kepp.
ugh

right past kaz

woohoo!

K’s Lee.

HBP for bradley
russ ortiz is up and throwing in the bullpen
The 1 good thing...

about not needing a 5th starter for a while.

well, here comes Ortiz

goodbye, Scuffy. I’ll miss you.

Thanks, Joe.
Dammit Joe

Hope you’re happy.

Haha.

Classic.

geez
home run fontenot

come back, scuffy! We didn’t know what we were doing when we sent you away!

that's a pretty sweet curve, Russ

but it would help if you could get it to stay somewhere close to the zone

walked theriot
OK, I figured it out

The game actually starts at 8 o’clock
We’ve just been watching/listening to the Cubs’ batting practice.

"we've switched the Astros pitching staff

with that of the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. Let’s see if they notice."

That didn't take long

surprised Coop already moved Pudge down the order.

Sigh… 8-0 huh?

Looks like another year where our Pythag record is nowhere near our real record. Blowout losses, close wins.

Who's up in the pen now?
Nerts to this

I got law finals.

Hill single...

Theriot 1st to 3rd.

Berkman catches a liner

inning over
8-0 fucklicks

Soriano is going to lead off...

his 3rd straight inning.

On course for

36-0.

that would be pretty impressive
Mid 2...

Cubs on pace for 36.

Miggy due up.

TexSkins

Great minds…

AStrso have 8 at-bats

to make a comeback

DAMMIT JOE

Haven’t you done enough?

+1 again.

You two should take this on the road.

tejada and pence fly out
Pudge double!
It says "deep center" on GameChannel...

please define “deep center” for me.

Further than shallow.

To the hill?

On the hill?

I'm in Philly

Couldn’t tell you.

Lub' him

I used to love Pudge when he was with the Rangers.

I’m actually glad he’s here, even if only for a one year rental stint.

rolled to the visiting bullpen wall
Anyone listening to Astros Broadcast?

Its cracking me up, Milo Hamilton is interviewing NASA Commander Archibald — guiys keeps saying he grew up in Chicago and is a huge Cubs fan. Needless to say Milo is not happy.

Haha How sweeeeeet it is…

yeah, y'all keep showing up down here for jobs

sorry your economy sucks

i mean, I know the space industry is limited in Chicago

but damn

Why I hate going to Cubs/Dodgers game in Houston, seems like it’s 50/50 in the stadium.

Not argument there

Maybe you guys should stop being so welcoming. Geez first Katrina now the Midwest expansion.

Southern Hospitability

Suck it.

And I really mean it

My comment came off pretty snarky, I should have previewed first. Not cool for me to say stuff like that considering the game circumstances.

Eh

It’s just one game out of 162. We’re bound to be embarrassed in a few of them. It’s cool.

it's alright,

my comment was innapropriate. Still, we tend to get tired of implications of “Wrigley South lol.” Tends to piss me off.

But it's true

Houston’s economy is still going relatively strong compared to the rest of the nation. As long as oil still runs through this nation we’ll be alright. Why I can’t wait to graduate and come back.

Well thats good

As I recall there were quite a few misplaced souls who ended up in Houston after Katrina. I would have thought that might have hurt the employment numbers

It was tough

But Houston is still a very successful city during the recession. I was there for Spring Break and you wouldn’t believe the amount of new construction still going on downtown. I must’ve saw 5 new/being built high-rises alone.

it's an intriguing phenomenon

probably caused by an abundance of land and absence of regulations on the housing market. So we didn’t get hit as hard by the bubble collapse.

Dude

Any ballpark outside of NY or Boston, can easily get a ton of “Cubs fans” most of them see a few games a year on TV and pull out their old smelly [insert popular Cub player here] jersey. They are the same guys that piss me off during game getting up every inning for another beer.

Or those

who threw on White Sox caps in the 2005 Series. Not true Cubs fans, only root for the winners.

Or root

For losers because its a great excuse to get dicked up at a baseball game. Trust me, I deal with these guys all the time. At Wrigley they call them “Chad with the cell phone”.

Sorry guys

didn’t mean for it to come out that way.

Hey

at least San Antonio is losing.

ugh

Ortiz and Moehler are making Fukodome look good

Moehler's ERA

37.80

I like that Moehler is sitting on the bench, watching,

as opposed to sulking in the clubhouse.

yeah, that's a good sign

but Moehler’s been through worse.

Mid 3...

8-0.

Cubs only on pace for 24.

Well Thank God

36 would just be EMBARRASSING.

Rangers record looking safe.
I was there

for the Jennings game in 2007. Anyone else?

Ortiz batting.

Brownie trying to find the bright side of Ortiz getting early work.

Aflac trivia:

who were the other 2 ROY in 1991. Pudge was 1 of 3 (apparently.)

bagwell and chuck knoblauch
JD and Brownie guess

Bagwell and Knoblach.

And were right.
Matsui grounds out.
JEFF KEPPINGER FLAT OUT BELTS ONE

3/3

Lilly missed his spot.

Kepp didn’t miss.

8-1. And the rally begins.

Kepp HR.

still 1.000.

NOT DEAD YET, SON
PUMA

8-2 ’Stros!

Keppinger = MVP?

Got my vote.

Carso: Not so fast, my friend.
good lord I hate that man
Lee just missed a hanging curve...

he definitely had Crawford Boxes in mind.

Then Lee just misses a change...

lined foul.

Then pops up to 3rd.

End 3. 8-2 Cubs.

Good inning

Let’s string a few more of those together and turn it into a game

Who does color

with Milo for you guys?

either

Dave Raymond or Brett Dolan

dolan, I think does color for both

Raymond calls games on the road

I could use me some more of that guy

And less of the “not-so-celebrity” interviews. Not that I’m lovin the homerun calls on my end, but Hamilton barely broke the interview to call them.

We have a smiliar problem

in Pat Hughes and Ron Santo, they do an interview during the Bottom 6th and Top 7th, and its really a waste.

I love Santo's calls...

super homer and he doesn’t care who knows it.

Yeah

He is what he is, but eventually I think they need to move on to a true color man who brings more than just anecdotal analysis to the table — ala Bob Brenly

If you get a chance...

check out JD, who does the Astros TV color. He’s really good and I’m not just saying that because I’m an Astros fan.

Cool, will do

I always like watching for good broadcasting talent…too bad there isn’t more of it.

I live in Dallas...

the TV guys here are terrible.

I like Palmer in Baltimore...

who else… ?

Well for radio

I enjoy me some Dave O’Brien for the Bo Sox (don’t listen often but he is good). Dan Galdden is pretty decent 2nd guy for the Twins. I like Rick Monday on the Dodgers broadcast. Guys that suck: Thom Brennaman for Cincy (His dad is worse tho) and Suzyn Waldman for the Yankees (horrible). Speaking of Palmer, Buck Martinez does a good job when Jim is off as well.

yeah, Hamilton isn't the best

he doesn’t really call the game anymore, preferring to do interviews or talk about whatever. It’s impossible to find out the count when he’s calling the game. The road games are better, since Raymond does them.

I wouldn't have a problem with him

Except for he really does hold a grudge against the Cubs for losing the job to Harry C. back in the day.

yeah,

he hated Carray, absolutely loathed him.

Wouldn't you too?

That “Space the Infinite Frontier” gig was SWEET.

"It's a simple question

Would you eat the moon if it was made out of spare ribs?"

Hey ol pete?

If you’re around… who’s the Brewers closer until Hoffman gets back?

Some more good news

San AN has blown a 19 point lead and is down by 9 now.

Rockets share lead in division!

cool

I like their chances against the Kings tomorrow

You got to

They have a real chance to win out and get HCA (I know this should move to The Dream Shake)

whatever

the best part? They could win their first division title since 1994.

1994

I think we did pretty good that year right?

yeah, I think so.

Something about some playoff victories or something, right?

I think

but it might’ve been Riley who said “heart of a champion.” Right after he slicked some more pomade into his hair.

sounds about right

Another one of Ewing’s many championships, as I recall.

(Seriously, I was about 5 when they won in 1994. I remember watching them in the finals against the knicks while they cut away to the OJ chase. I was over at my cousin’s while my mom was at work. We had one of those Little Caesar’s BigFoot pizzas they used to sell.)

I was 9

And I remember wishing on a star that the Rockets won Game 7. God I was so stupid.

Ortiz K's Ramirez...

3 K’s in a row.

K!

Alright Russ…keep it goin.

Fontenot and Ortiz battle...

finally k’s him. 4 in a row.

DUDE

What happened?!?!

Joe in Birmingham happened.
Fuckin'

Joe in fuckin’ Birmingham.

watch your tongue

You’re getting rude

Theriot single.
JD and Brownie end their 5 minute conversation on food...

as Hill K’s.

Mid 4, still 8-2.

Ok better way to get at what I wanted

Was Moehler just leaving them fat, or what?

at first

he was making his pitches, and the Cubs were just making good contact and slapping them into the outfield. But he lost his control pretty quickly and just sucked after about the 4-0 point.

I wasn't watching then...

but from the comments, it seemed like a few broken bats and seeing eye type stuff just snowballed.

Depression

What I meant to post below depression

so

you’re saying there’s a chance….

Give her a kiss, Milo!
holy shit he did it
Milo and GW talking...

I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that.

Milo getting interviewed now.

About renaming of Milo Hamilton Way.

Tejada singles up the middle.
Pence pops out behind the plate.

Hill had plenty of trouble. JD and Brownie debate the wind.

Let's get a rally goin

Turn your hats inside out! if you don’t have a hat steal one!

let's see if the Milo stuff works on Pudge

Hit a homer, Pudge

Only_A_Lad...

the anti-Joe.

Pudge Homer.
8-4.
On the Tracks... or over.

Brownie says over.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
What's the depression look like?

More like a recession?

get on base, Michael!
didn't work

well, It was fun while it lasted

HOLY SHIT

It’s the anti-Joe from Birmingham!

Again... great minds.
Pudge has more HRs than Lance.
I'll take Lance on that one too
whats wrongwith joe from birmingham?
Good question
He's the devil.
totally jinxed moehler

through stinkin’ thinkin’

Then caused a 3 run homer

with more stinkin’ thinkin’.

Read above.

Short version: Joe made a joke about Moehler, who then decided to pull a Jennings… and we, being true fans, won’t let it die.

i commend you on your persistence good sir
Part of being a fan.

Joe has been quiet of late. I worry about him.

"Look at me! I'm shaking like a schoolboy!"
Please keep the Dumb and Dumber references coming.
what am i lookin at here
its probably already explained somewhre

so nvm

"We got no food, no jobs... our PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!"
win expectancy

essentially, because several hundred thousand baseball games have been played since the 1870s, we know what the expected number of runs scored in a given situation is. So we can say what the likelihood of a team winning the game is. It’s pretty cool stuff, really.

Pudge

raised his average to .300

Bourn K's.

Michaels gets called back… Ortiz stays in.

Sampson warming up.

Patton (sp?) up for Cubs.

Black Out

Stupid Dish Network and blackout. And WGN has the Sox game. Boo

why would it be blacked out?

that sucks, man

Dude...

go to the sports alternate channels. 443. Only HD, though.

I Did

I went to The Alt and its Blacked out.

But I get the Rangers game…… yea…..

8-4

Coming back

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Joe

If you really have these powers, let’s get together on making a steal on the stock market.

i wouldnt be surprised

if joe was the one who thought cutting fed reserve interest rates was good idea

I'm terrible at stock market (but I was against cutting federal rate)

But I am hoping Lottery ticket comes through tonight.

Kidding.

I love you, Joe.

Top 5...

8-4. Lilly will bat.

The ESPN commentators

last night said that Ivan was very uncomfortable at the plate. Basically saying he didn’t know his head from his ass.

Must've done his anatomy homework last night.
ortiz

baby bear killer

Wow!

What’d I miss, boys?

It's hard to get answers

Outside of Joe jinxing us.

JOOOOEEEEEEEE!

(screamed like Shatner’s KKAAAAHHHHNNNN!)

moehler sucked, Ortiz has been fairly effective
Umm...

12 runs, Joe the cursed one, a Cubs fan, Aflac trivia, a few HRs, JD’s take on food… what else?

damn it

i miss all the good stuff!

OH!

Milo pulling a Wille Joe Namath and kissing Patty Smith.

I really, really, really...

hate Patty Smith.

but JD's dad sure doesn't

and nor does Milo.

She’s alright, but she’s given a lot of stupid interviews to do.

6K's for Ortiz.
Alright

Blanket policy: Lay off Joe.

Actually...

since we got on his case… they have scored 4.

I’m not saying, but I’m just saying.

i hate the Bob commercials
"No Way! That's Great... [chuckles] WE'VE LANDED ON THE MOON!!"
Ok

Let’s bring the gamethread over here, it’s starting to slow down because of all the comments.

I wonder

What the record is for most Crawfishboxes.com posts during a game thread?
