Mike Hampton never seemed to settle in, and the previously anemic Braves offense took advantage.
The rains, oh they came in, and there was a rain delay.
After the wet interlude, play resumed but the score remained the same. Damn
"Stone of Triumph" performance: Michael Bourn going 3/5 at the plate and making several sparkling defensive plays
"Stone of Shame" performance: Mike Hampton. 5 ER allowed, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HR. Per Joe in Birmingham's suggestion, Lance Berkman shall have the stone attached firmly to his bulbous neck. A throwing error and another un-Berkman like day at the plate.
This was posted before the game actually ended, so in the event of a "Dewey Defeats Truman" type mistake, my sincerest apologies.

Poor Hampton
never stood a chance.
You know, regardless of the quality of your starters, you’re just not going to win many games averaging 3.5 runs/game.

It's ridiculous
that lineup looks pretty decent on paper (Matsui capable at lead-off, Berkman/Lee/Pence, Pudge arguably better than what the 2008 tandem produced and Bourn and Blum surprising a little). Yet they’ve stunk it up offensively.
Same thing last year. Everyone thought the Astros offence would be carrying them through games, but they only did barely enough and had to rely on the rotation to pitch okay and the bullpen to hold tight leads.

I never expected the Astros' offense to be great.
The offense wasn’t great last year. But I hoped it would be middle of the road. However, the offense is suffering mightily from Berkman’s slump. The Astros’ offfense is dependent on the Berkman-Lee middle for run production, probably moreso than other ML lineups are dependent on two hitters. The Bourn improvement is very good, but it can’t compensate.
As for this game, even at its best, the Astros’ offense isn’t going to score much against Lowe. And, given its recent weakness, this was a terrible matchup for the Astros, from the beginning. Lowe pitched 8 innings, which doesn’t give the Astros much choice.

sorry, I mis read the boxscore....
Lowe didn’t pitch 8 innings….only 6.2 innings.

Stone of Shame should be to Lance Berkman
Hitting slump continued; plus a critical mental and throwing error
