Astros offense explodes a mile high

Things went very, very well for the Astros offense tonight and it obscured a less than stellar outing for Mike Hampton.  Every starter got a hit, it was just a slug-fest of epic proportions.  Drink it in.

Even though Hampton's ERA takes a hit in this game, it's misleading...

because he pitched well, all things considered. This was one of those days at Coors Field that no pitcher would be safe. As JD said, the only way to pitch in Coors Field is to change your expectations and standards for what a good pitching outing is. After Hampton allowed the Rockies to tie the Astros at 3-3, he did a good job of bearing down and putting up zeroes on the board for about four or five innings. Spillbourgh’s triple in the 2d was hit hard, but most of the later hits weren’t that hard. And even guys as fast as Pence and Bourn had difficulty covering the gaps in that outfield. Lee has to play with his back to the wall in LF, meaning that almost any flyball to LF falls in.

As for a bad pitcher outing: we're talking about you, Mr. Geary.
All those hits

and poor Jason Smith is still sporting an 0-fer. At least his GIDP probably didn’t impact his WPA much.
