This was a win that everyone contributed to:
Roy Oswalt pitched only one inning, as a quintet of relievers: Paulino, Byrdak, Sampson, Brocail, and Hawkins, closed the game out. One run was allowed in eight innings of work. That's a shot in the arm for a struggling 'pen
Lance Berkman got the Astros on the board early with a solo shot to left. Second day in a row he's gone to the opposite field for a hit. Maybe he's coming around a little?
Hunter Pence collected three hits, while Pudge Rodriguez and Carlos Lee added two knocks apiece. Mike Bourn hit a triple for the second game in a row.
Three of our five runs were scored with two outs.
Tomorrow is a winable game as well, with Wandy on the mound against Braves starter Jo-Jo Reyes.

count it!
He has his sights set on being Astro player of the month in May, as well as April.

Paulino had bad luck in not getting the win.
Byrdak got the win instead of Paulino. As the unofficial scorer blog noted, accordng to the rules, Paulino would normally get the win in this situaition. In order for the scorer (the “official” scorer, as opposed to the unofficial scorer, Levine) to take the win away from Paulino, he had to deem Paulino “ineffective” in a “brief” appearance. Levine points out that the rules suggest 2 runs or more is “ineffective.” Paulino allowed 1 run in two innings. The scorer is being pretty tough on Paulino to deem him “ineffective,” IMO. Maybe he was persuaded by the fact that Paulino’s run tied the score.
In any event, this isn’t important in the grand scheme of things. But it would have been nice to see the rookie get the win.

nothing like subjective interpretations
making a difference in a game

the astros' offense
has been making all the starters look a lot worse than they really are. Same goes for the bullpen. It can seem like Paulino’s struggled in his last couple of starts, but that’s because he’s only worked behind a slim lead.
