Sportsmanship isn't discussed all that much on TCB, but I'm interested to see what y'all think about shaking your opponent's hand after a tough playoff series
We had some diiscussion of the Cardinals/Tejada article..
in a previous thread I won’t go over all that, but I posted a link late during that discussions to the reaction at vivaelbirdos, the SBN Cards’ site. They are decidedly negative on trading for Tejada and say “pass.”
But I am not looking forward to the Astros’ lineup at AL ballparks. Most likely Jason Michael or Darin Erstad will be added to the lineup, with Berkman or Lee pinch hitting. Erstad is hitting .119 and Michael is hitting .189. Compared to the AL teams’ DH lineup, that is what you call a mis-match. In the past, I always liked the period when the Astros had to use a DH, because there was always a good hitter on the bench who wasn’t getting enough playing time (like Lamb, Loretta, or Erstad when he was hitting well). But the Astros’ bench is horrible this year.
Unfortunately, Michaels’ defense in LF isn’t a lot better than Lee’s. This is time period when I wish the Astros had Abercrombie instead of Michael. Abercrombie probably would hit better than Michael and he would definitely be a big step up in defense for LF.
As usual, clack, you’ve voiced something I’ve been thinking about myself. I was actually going through the 40-man roster this morning, looking for someone who’d be useful in LF while Carlos DH’s. I was surprised to see that Abercrombie isn’t on the 40-man.
Yordany Ramirez is, though, and I’d really like to see him get a shot on the road trip through Arlington and Minnesota. There’s no denying his outfield defense and his bat has certainly improved this year. I like him in the 4th/5th outfielder role, and think we should really start getting him ready to play that role in 2010.
Curiously, we’re carrying 6 infielders and 4 outfielders, plus Erstad being the resident “super-utility” guy who plays both. I really can’t think of a realistic roster move that would get Yordany up short of someone going on the 15-day DL. Which is actually a possibility. Maybe with consistent AB in interleague, Erstad will bust out of his slump.

This is perhaps a day or so early to bring up.
