Tuesday Morning Astros, etc. Round Up

The final leg of the Lone Star Series gets underway, but I won't dignify it with a link about it:
- The Astos have signed 22 of their 51 selections from the draft including just about all of our top picks. Tag's post also has this to say about Mier:
Heck and scout Doug Deutsch are still negotiating with first-round pick Jiovanni Mier, a high school shortstop from southern California. "It's been very positive," Heck said. "Doug Deutsch has had multiple meetings with the family since his selection, and we've been given all indicators it's going to happen sooner than later.
- JJO checks in with Chris Johnson, who apparently truly understands the value of plate discipline and his lack thereof. Plus JJO throws out this interesting tidbit, which hadn't occurred to be, but is pretty much par for the course:
In fact, the Astros are the only team in the National League not to have a player make his major league debut this year.
- Miguel Tejada needs help in getting to the All Star game...geeze leading the NL in batting doesn't get you any respect these days...or is it playing for an rather relevant team...
- Why FIP isn't a the best, or even a very good, measure of a pitcher's true talent level. Well written and it informs us that Roy Oswalt has been slightly undervalued this year, while Wandy Rodriguez is, apparently, pretty overvalued—suck.
- BtB wants you, or at least some suggestions.
It seems to me that his criticism of FIP, can be fixed...
by using x-FIP (which is also a Hardball Times stat). That stat normalizes the HR/FB rate.
Wandy’s comparative FIP, x-FIP, and RA/9:
RA: 3.62 FIP: 3.16 x-FIP 3.69

His tRA and tRA*
are 3.96 and 4.36, respectively though. That’s a more substantial difference on stats that are more thorough than xFIP.
Stephen Higdon - June 16, 2009
That's a pretty wide swath of stats
AstroAndy - June 16, 2009
what am I missing?
the link you posted indicates a tRA of 3.04, tRA+ of 136, and tRA* of 4.10 for Wandy in 2009.
clack - June 16, 2009
You're missing nothing
I read the wrong year…epic fail.
Stephen Higdon - June 16, 2009
also the fact that the league tRA is a rather high 4.71...
makes me think that these stats are directly comparable.

Ortiz implies that the Astros should have called up Chris Johnson.
But look at his numbers at Round Rock so far.
.730 OPS.
Isolate power (ISO): .117
K rate: 23.9%
BB rate: 2.6%
He has a lot of areas to improve in order to show he belongs at the ML level.

i think JJO
would be helped out a lot if we pointed him to minor league reference, fangraphs, etc….
Evan Hochschild - June 16, 2009
Eh
If people were computers, maybe all this overanalyzing by The Hardball Times would make sense.

yeah
and those damn bloggers in their mothers’ basements are screwing up sports, too.

Edwin Maysonet
While JJO’s comment that the Astros organization is the only NL team not to have a player makes his MLB debut in 2009 is technically correct, it is a bit misleading.Okay -Edwin Maysonet did play in 7 games as a September 2008 callup – but this year is his first serious playing time in the Majors.
I agree with Clack’s assessment of Chris Johnson (and I favored letting Johnson start third base for the Astros out of spring training – at least until the Astros acquired Jeff Keppinger)
