Slow news day doesn't begin to describe it:
"After that ball that hit Wandy yesterday, I thought he wasn’t even going to get into the third today," said Valverde, who pitched the ninth for the save. "He pitched really well. It was scary when it hit him on a line. But we have to keep hitting him if he’ll pitch like this."
It was about 18 months ago that Tal Smith said something that sounded surprising at the time. ''Wandy is right on schedule,'' he said. ''He's close to becoming a polished major league pitcher. We have to be patient. Not all these guys are like Roy (Oswalt). They don't all come up and become stars overnight. Wandy has had to figure out what works and what doesn't. He has had to learn to trust his stuff.''
Final Summary: While it's hardly a ground-breaking draft, the Astros are definitely moving in the right direction under scouting director Bobby Heck, focusing on athletes and ceiling in order to replenish one of the minor leagues' weakest systems.
That's all I've got.

Did you pick up on this unexpected line?
Russ Ortiz “.778 winning percentage at Minute Maid Park is tied for the highest in the stadium’s history by pitchers with at least nine decisions.”

I posted it
And I missed it. I would say impressive, but then again, it’s winning percentage. Still fascinating, though.

it always seemed like the Astros had trouble with Ortiz...
when he pitch for SF and Atlanta.

another Astros connection to the Willy Taveras link at BtB:
the writer is calling on the Reds to promote Stubbs, who he says can produce more than Willy Taveras right now. Justice used to bring up the Stubbs story frequently in years past, as an illustration of the Astros’ drafting problems. The Astros drafted Stubbs out of high school, knowing that he would require an above slot bonus to skip his UT scholarship. The Astros reportedly had an agreement with Stubbs. But supposedly Bud Selig called and complained to Drayton McLane that the Astros were paying him too much. McLane called off the signing.

Odd to look around the game thread yesterday
and then look at the wrap over at Twinkie Town. They thought the game was boring. I guess having your team get beat isn’t fun, sometimes its painful, but it doesn’t sound like it was boring.
I have to say playing in the Twinkie Dome has been unpleasant for the Brewers the past couple years, but it sounded like it wasn’t a big deal for the Astros. Its interesting that Wandy did so well. Maybe there is some similarity between there and MMP that agrees with him or perhaps there really isn’t much to the home and away history other than a small sample oddity.
Besides the Twins, have you guys been following the Rockies? They’ve won something like 16 of 17 since you got 3 in a row from them. Brewers struggled against them last year as well.

Dear Willy T
Willy T has officially let me down. As much as it pains me to say it…I am starting to accept the fact that Michael Bourn may actually be better than Willy T. It is a sad day

Hahaha

One of these evenings I'm a gonna go back and dig up all the salty things
that were said about Michael Bourn here.

Oh there was a lot
My point was just to rub it Milhouse23’s face.

BPro's Future Shock column gave the Astros' system some love, too:

Matthew Purke
Yeah, his numbers this were down quite a bit from last year, but he should be pretty legit. Do not know if he will sign though, friends brother caught him and I hear it is a coin toss. Another promising pitcher that the Astros actually drafted (7th round) is the kid from Arkansas, watched him close out the game the other night against Virgina, looked to have a good fastball and + off speed pitch.

Hooks are on FSN (Monday night)
Dierker is one of the broadcasters for this game I think. Probably a chance to watch Castro.
