Astros broadcasters tip toed around a Cooper comment before the game to the effect that he doesn’t know his status for next year. He said he has a contract next year and wants to come back, but “it’s not my decision.” Cooper referenced a comment by McLane that all aspects of the team would be evaluated after the season is over.
Your (clack’s) first post in today’s game said Blum was upset about not starting since he was batting over .500 against Suppan; and more importantly that Cooper said Blum had every right to be upset.
Did you get a feel for what motivated Cooper to say that. Was he saying Blum as apyer who knows in his heart he can help the team in a certain game should be angry when a manager makes a different choice?
or was it a slam against Astros management for ordering him to play the call-ups ? If this one , Coop does himself no favors by alienating Ed Wade and Drayton McLane.
The broadcasters didn’t give any indication, even though it was interesting that they brought it up at the beginning of the broadcast, not just an offhand comment. They said Cooper made these comments at his pregame press meeting.
It could be either possibility, but the second one (a slam at Astros telling hiim to play call ups) certainly came to mind, since Cooper tends to be more defensive when he is talking about his own choices.
Moehler said he felt fine before Cooper pulled him in the 7th...
which turned into a disaster after he left. But Cooper pointed to his 91 pitches before he was pulled, saying:
“That’s been kind of his number,” Cooper said. “I was going to try to give him a chance to go out in the seventh and get a couple outs. After the leadoff base-hit I thought it was best to go, and I liked my matchups, and it just didn’t work out for us.”
Yeah, I’ll say it didn’t work out. I only made this post because the idea of “91 pitches” being Moehler’s “number,” struck me as funny.
I like how Cooper just spat
Classy.

I could go for that.
The only question is, what is Drayton waiting for? Get him in here before Cooper ruins anymore arms.
